Disclaimer: I do not own Hinata, she is owned by Masashi Kishimoto along with the rest of the Naruto characters. I only own this plot.
Author's Note: I was trying to write something where Neji was unkind to Hinata in an arranged marriage but I never included his name- I find it too hard to make him a bad guy =( So, imagine it as Neji if you want... I no longer do. Hope you enjoy =)
Dreams
Hinata dreamed that she would marry for love.
She never dreamed that she would marry for the convenience of her clan.
Hinata dreamed that her first kiss would be passionate, in a romantic setting at the perfect moment.
She never dreamed that it would be awkward, quick, in front of everyone she knew, at the altar on her wedding day.
Hinata dreamed that her first time would be with her soulmate. She imagined it would be uncomfortable but she wouldn't mind because they'd whisper sweet nothings in her ear to soothe her and there would be nothing in the world but her and her love.
She never dreamed that it would be with someone that the clan chose for her. She never imagined it would be painful and only his grunts and her moans could distract her, which wasn't enough. She never imagined it would be solely for the purpose of producing an heir.
Hinata dreamed that when she told her husband she was pregnant they would be lying snuggled close together in bed one morning and he would kiss her and congratulate her and hold her close. They would spend the day in bed talking about possible names and the things that would change.
She never dreamed that she would blurt it out to break an awkward silence as they ate dinner after he'd returned from a long mission. She never imagined that there would be a moment of strained silence before he made a grunt of acknowledgement and continued eating without a word, sitting at the opposite end of the table.
Hinata dreamed that when she was in labour, her husband would hold her hand and rub her back and encourage her through it all.
She never dreamed that he would sit silently, his face impassive and then excuse himself to wait outside, leaving her alone with the hospital staff, who would help her through.
Hinata dreamed that she would cry exhausted but joyous tears as she held her baby in her arms, thinking of just how loved it would be.
She never dreamed that she would cry exhausted, sorrowful tears as she thought of how she was the only one who would truly love her son.
Hinata dreamed that when she introduced her husband to the baby she had come to know over the last nine months, he would smile and kiss her damp forehead and take their child from her arms to hold it in his own. He would gently touch the little face with his index finger and the child would grab it and hold it, forming an unbreakable bond between them.
She never dreamed that when she introduced her husband to their baby, he would look at the child unsmiling and express the hope that it would be strong and say nothing more, that when she offered the child to him to hold, he would decline and cross his arms over his chest to affirm that he had no desire to hold his own son.
It was then that Hinata stopped dreaming, became afraid to dream because dreams never come true.
