I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
I remembered all the times we had come here together, to this spot. We never did anything important here, just talked. We talked about people and places and where we'd be in ten years. He was going to be a football player, and I a writer. Until the day that everything changed...
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need something to begin
The man got up and walked slowly over to a tree down the riverbank. It had once been a beautiful tree, I had heard, and people used to jump from its branches into the river. Now we aren't allowed in trees at all.
I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?
I stared up at the branches, remembering the last time I had been here. The tree looked much smaller now, more subdued. On an impulse, I climbed up into its branches. When I got up I looked down at the water, surprised. Was that the distance I had feared to jump? Fearless now, knowing this was something I had to do, I jumped.
And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know
The man climbed out of the water, still fully clothed. No one would suspect what he'd done, because everything was thoroughly soaked by the rain. Only I would know. I watched him walk away slowly. I never saw him again.
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know
I glanced up at the room we had shared for almost two years just in time to see two boys, one dragging the other away from the window where I realized he'd been watching me. I was reminded strongly of myself by this boy. I turned back to the street to get a taxi, leaving behind Devon School forever.
