Idea: This is what I get for listing to Survivor by Destines Child when my iPod was on shuffle… I am not even a huge fan of Artemis.
Author's Note: Review? Please?
Artemis was a survivor, has been for years. At a young age, she learned to take whatever the world threw at her. She could take a hit and get back up; that was what Sportsmaster taught her.
There was no room in her life for tears; there weren't any when her sister walked out the door. One less person to care about, she told herself.
There was no need to make connections. People were weaknesses, and Artemis didn't need any more of those. She didn't need friends; they made life difficult. Don't make any, then don't care about anyone. Simple. That is how she survived.
Two days after moving to Gotham with her mother, she followed a group of sidekicks to Gotham Academy.
Two days later Green Arrow and Batman introduced her to a convert team called Young Justice.
Two weeks with the team, she found herself; giggling with Megan in the kitchen, brooding with Connor in front of the static TV, trading books with Kaldur, and training with Robin. She even enjoyed arguing with Wally, though she would never admit it to anyone, especially Kid Annoying.
Two months passed with the team when their home base was attacked. Crouching in the air vent, she watched as Superboy and Kid Flash fought to break out of their cement body casts. She tightened her grip on her bow until knuckles turned white, as Kaldur and Megan slowly fell due to the heat of their cage. She stifled a scream when Robin stopped thrashing in his water prison.
This was why Artemis didn't' make connections, she wasn't supposed to have friends.
Artemis took a deep breath and forced herself to loosen her grip on her bow. She needed to focus, needed to survive, needed to help her friends survive.
Two hours later the Justice League sent them away and in the middle of the living room Artemis was forced into a group hug.
Two months, two weeks, two days and four hours since moving to Gotham; that was how long it took Artemis to realize that she wanted more than to just survive.
