"Wizard Policant"

A drabble.


Once, Policant had taught students to be the best of wizards, to think for themselves, to ask themselves questions. Year after year he had turned out many a fine magic-user. He had served his University faithfully.
But the University, or rather its Council, was rather distrustful at that period in time. The Council thought he would undermine their power- that he was building up an army of wizards that could be summoned in an instant. So they came to the conclusion that he needed to be gotten rid of.
In the olden days the word of the Council was law in the University. An old magic which Policant himself had helped make made it so.
They for three days and three nights they locked themselves into the Council Chamber, to debate his fate.
They settled on this: either he could be stripped of his power and exiled to the other continent, or they would imprison him on University grounds.
He chose to stay, and they announced that he would be entombed in a statue to stand forever as an example to others. They tied the spell that did it to the University wards.
Most of the Council members assumed that thought suspended animation was better than to live the rest of his existence without his power, but that was not his real reason, for he lived by the University law.
And around that time one of Policant's students, whose talent was foresight, offered him hope, for she had prophesied that the wards would go down and he would come alive to take up his post again. Cynics said this would never happen, because griffins did not exist, and, after all, it was prophesied to happen in the YEAR OF THE GRIFFIN...
