Fade to Black

"Is that going to be me someday? The girl tearing up a note over the garbage can while you soar away into the skies?" he teased in her ear, his breath warm and soft.

"No, you'll always be the one leaving me behind," she whispered back with a grin, glancing over at him in the dark movie theater just as the credits started to roll.

"One of these days I'll be bringing you in with me." He crunched on the last of his popcorn, winking at her.

"Mhmm. Which is why you took me to the movies." She nestled closer, his arm snaking around her shoulders and his lips brushing across her temple. The crowded theater slowly emptied but they remained until the lights raised and they no longer felt hidden in the shadows.

He pulled her to her feet, his arm wrapped around her waist, hand warm through a thin dress. Tossing their popcorn bags in the trash, he curled her closer to him past the security camera, hiding her face. Her lips brushed his cheek, earning herself a smirk and a tighter grip on her. "Imagine that, Nathan Ford hiding a known criminal."

"Not only hiding but consorting with," he teased, tugging her into the dark down a side street so he could press her against the wall, a hand on either side of her.

Sophie smiled warmly. "Why, Mr. Ford," she scolded, glancing down demurely between them.

Crooking a finger under her chin, he raised an eyebrow. "Don't play coy with me, Miss Devereaux." When he kissed her, he tasted of salt and butter and popcorn, such a deliciously innocent combination, she had to wrap her arms around him and kiss him back, hard.

In shadowy corners like this, with his body around her and his lips on hers, she always felt as though they were living in an old movie. The fifties maybe, or the sixties. In the light of day they always came to their senses but at 11 o'clock on a Friday night she could pretend he was Steve McQueen or Cary Grant and he didn't have obligations in the morning.
