Desire
She had watched him for years, watched him through the shadows or when no one else was looking. She knew they would never be together, that she couldn't have him, despite how little notice most people took of him or often outright ignored him in favour of his more famous friend, Harry Potter.
No one knew of her secret. She had hidden it well within the supposed shallowness and boy-loving attitude most people associated with her. That had not taken much she just had needed to befriend Parvati Patil and she would have received that name anyway. That girl was a walking disaster.
It was obvious. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger would be together, that much the entire Gryffindor House had known ever since Third Year. They never needed to admit their feelings but everyone in Hogwarts knew that both Ron and Hermione were taken even if they did not know it themselves. They were blissfully oblivious to the fact that most of the House, no school, were waiting for the two to finally kiss.
She couldn't help it though. Lavender Brown liked Ron Weasley, perhaps even more than liked. She had watched him ever since he had gone after the Philosophers Stone at the end of First Year.
That's the funny thing about knowing you couldn't have something. It makes you desperate.
She had been desperate. One night Ron had come into the Common Room looking angry and hurt she had seen her chance, the opportunity of a life time, and had taken it despite the risk of it to her own emotions.
It had been even better when he had told her how betrayed he felt when he had found out Hermione had kissed Viktor Krum the year before and hadn't told him. She had pressed her advantage and it had worked. They had begun dating, something she had never thought possible. She knew somewhere deep at the back of her mind that he was only using her to make Hermione jealous, she pushed those thoughts away though. She did not want to believe it despite the truth that rang in the words.
She had been dating Ron Weasley. It had been something of a scandal within their house. Someone had taken Ron Weasley out from under Hermione Granger's nose. That had given them hope to date Harry Potter, he hadn't shown interest in anyone yet. It had to be easier. She had not cared about them or Harry. She wanted Ron and she had him.
She had had the object of her desire within her hands and he had slipped through the cracks. Harry had come to her later and had apologized for Ron. He had told her that Ron had felt she was too pushy and overbearing. She had accepted it gracefully. It was a poorly veiled excuse but she had known that being together with Ron would not last from the very beginning. She had tried.
The world had slipped back into its original position. Everything was back to normal.
He was her desire but she wasn't his desire. Hermione was.
