Let's Play Chess
It was late. The moon was full and high in the night sky.
Percy, eyes closed, hummed as he sat in his room. He's bound to be here any moment now, he thought. A few seconds later, he heard the quiet scrapping of metal on his floor.
"Happy 19th Birthday, Percy," the visitor said.
Looking at his visitor, Percy smiled widely. "Thanks, Nico. I appreciate that."
"You know it's standard procedure," Nico said, huffing as he put down his scythe and got comfortable. "We've been doing this for years now, isn't that right?"
"Yep, and I know exactly what we'll be doing," Percy said, standing from his bed and walking towards the closet.
"What game are we playing this time," Nico asked, a hint of amusement laced his voice.
Percy picked up a large box, and presented it with a smile. "Let's play chess," he said.
"Again," Nico asked. "Haven't we've played this twice already?"
"We have, but that shouldn't matter. Our agreement was a contest," Percy replied placing the pieces down. "I win, I live. You win, you reap my soul."
"You are right about that, but I thought you would at least be a bit more spontaneous like you were when you were younger," Nico said honestly.
"Well, I've come to enjoy the simple game we play. Not everyone gets to contest with Death every year on their birthday," Percy quipped, all the pieces now assembled. "Not to mention, our conversations are always so therapeutic."
"I'm glad you enjoy my company, however, you shouldn't ignore the fact that we are supposed to keep this serious," Nico watched as Percy moved a pawn. "I do try to make it comfortable though, our conversation may just be your last."
"I don't think so," Percy replied quickly. "I'll be winning this game just like I've done before."
"What makes you say that," Nico asked moving a knight.
"Because you enjoy my company just as much as I enjoy yours," Percy smiled softly as he made his next move. "Now, what should I start on this year? My achievements? My hardships? My love life? I'll let you pick this time."
Nico would often be taken aback, however he knew it was true. He was quite fascinated by this mortal. So maybe he's pulled a few blunders. Perhaps, he's not giving his all in the matches. It doesn't really matter to him.
"I think achievements would be a great start."
A.N:
Wow, my first PJatO fic. It was kinda iffy trying to figure out exactly how I wanted to write it, but short and nice shall do. Though I originally wanted a bit of romance in it.
I have an important poll up(it's only viewable via the Destop/Tablet version of the site) for my next main fic, basically choosing the fandom it will be in, and it's going to be available until January 5th. I'd love your input on the poll as an alternative to a review! :3
If you wish to do both, who do you think won in the end? Heheh.
Ciao for now~
