Raindrops

What was it about the thought of the sky weeping, that first amazed me? To think that the whole world could darken and finally break down...it seemed strangely beautiful.

A smile gently came to me as I savored the feeling of warm raindrops on my skin. The earth seemed different after a rain-shower, almost as if the air was charged with new life. As if...she had finally released all the grief built up within her heart.

I could still remember a lot of times when I felt like the earth after a rain-shower. But...

"Aelita...?"

I opened my eyes suddenly as I turned to face the oh so familiar voice. As I scanned over every angle of his typically worried expression, a slight laugh broke free from my heart.

"Jeremie... It's only a rain-shower, I made sure there wasn't any lightning before I came outside. Really..."

His uncertain blue eyes peered up at the sky from underneath the umbrella he was clutching, as if he were trying to reassure himself of what I'd said.

"I...I guess so. But you're getting wet, you could catch a cold or-"

With a playful smile ringing on my face I reached out to gently tug the umbrella from his clutches. Meekly he surrendered it to me, but seemed shocked when I closed it and left us both to the mercy of the elements.

"A-Aelita!?" He stumbled out as raindrops forced his blonde hair to cling to his forehead. I laughed again as I reached for his hand.

"Now we're both getting wet. And Jeremie, something tells me we have a pretty good chance of survival. I mean...scientifically speaking of course."

He simply stared at me for a few moments before a slightly embarrassed smile crept onto his damp face.

"Well I suppose when you put it that way..." He said while slowly pushing his glasses a little farther up the bridge of his nose. It was just another attempt to hide the slight blush coloring his cheeks.

I smiled softer as I reached to hug his neck. No matter how many years went by, just behind his eyes, I could always find the shy boy I first fell in love with.

"You know Jeremie..." I whispered gently into his ear. "The thing about rain-showers is that the earth finally let's go of what makes her sad... She get's another chance at a new life..." I pulled back just enough to catch a glimpse of his kind eyes.

"That actually reminds me of something else too..."

"Of what...?" He asked softly as his puzzled smile beamed across every little angle of his face.

I let the subtle feeling in my heart spill over to my expression as I looked up at him.

"Of you..."

His eyes softened as I heard the breath catch in his throat. I laughed again as I turned to look up toward the now clearing sky.

"And there's the proof that earth really is happy with her new life." He tilted his head back until he noticed the same wonder I had.

"Aelita..."

I smiled as I let the sight of so many colors fill me with the same amazement I had first found all those years ago.

Playing sweetly in my memory, I could hear the lengthy explanation of rainbow formations Jeremie had nervously recited that day. I had found it interesting then, and would have even now.

But most of all, I let myself bask in this one amazing moment...

A moment to be truly real...

With the earth at my feet...the air filling my lungs...and his heart beating just within reach...
