"Will, where are you taking me?" Tessa inquired, reaching for the ends of her blindfold, but Will snatched her hands away from it and seized her wrists.
"It's a secret," she heard him say, and Tessa could hear the smile in his voice. "Now hold still. We're almost there."
Earlier, Will had unexpectedly burst into her room, announcing that he was taking her out. He hadn't told her where they would be going, but just kept grinning as they walked out of the Institute. As soon as they left, he pulled out a blindfold and wrapped it around her head without her knowing. After many, many protests from Tessa, she stayed quiet during the very long carriage ride, no longer attempting to ask questions, for it was futile.
She heard a crashing sound—and then it clicked. Tessa jumped up and exclaimed, "Oh, oh! Are we at the beach?" She yanked off the blindfold before he could do anything, and sure enough, they were. The sun was setting over the horizon, a large variety of warm colors across the sky. The ocean itself was sparkling with a few shades of pink and orange from the reflection of the sky. The waters consumed the sand, flattening out whatever was there before.
Tessa looked up at Will who was smiling a bit nervously, eyes squinting, for he was facing the sun. "Yes." Then his face fell and he sighed, rubbing his temples. "It was supposed to be a surprise."
He had a tendency for taking her out to places—especially places in books—ever since the two got married. So to Tessa, another trip wasn't much of a surprise, but that didn't mean she did not enjoy it.
"And what a lovely surprise it is," said Tessa, standing on her toes and pressing a kiss on the very tip of his nose. He closed his eyes and sighed once again, though this time blissfully. She stepped back down and tried to conceal a smile as his cheeks reddened. "Thank you. It's wonderful."
He then smiled mischievously. "Want to go for a swim?"
Tessa stared at him incredulously. "But I am in a dress!" she sputtered.
Will waved his hand dismissively. "And I am wearing shoes. And the sky is blue. And your eyes are gray, though with a hint of blue in them—especially when you're in a good mood."
She raised an eyebrow at him in silent inquiry, but he just shrugged without looking at her. "I bet I can get to the water before you do, Mrs. Herondale." Will winked at her before grinning brilliantly.
Tessa felt a light fluttering in her stomach at the mention of 'Mrs. Herondale.'
But she remained nonchalant and said, "Is that a challenge, my dear husband?"
His eyes narrowed, looking at the crashing waves. "Oh, but it is, darling wife."
She smiled. "On the count of three, then?"
"On the count of three," he confirmed.
"One…" Tessa began.
"Two…" Will's voice was octaves higher.
"Three!"
And they ran off, Tessa's skirts in her hands and running as fast as she can, enjoying the adrenaline rush and the wind blowing into her face and hair.
She looked over to Will who was obviously slowing down for her. He was faster, being a Shadowhunter, but she took advantage of it and picked up her pace, the ocean immediately soaking her skirts and halfway up to her bodice, not even caring.
Will caught up to her and captured her in an embrace, holding her tightly against him and his mouth came down gently on hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he wrapped his around her waist, their bodies pressed together.
It was a sweet, loving and gentle kiss that seemed to last for ages until Tessa pulled away, gasping for breath. Will smiled at her and she felt her heart race faster.
And Tessa, smiling back at Will, thought, I think I may be very fond of surprises, before pulling him back into another kiss.
