L'ignoranza è beatitudine
Disclaimer: This story is not related to twilight… AT ALL. It's a random thought, I had.
As the train came to a halt, I saw them peering into the compartment, obviously looking for him. How could I tell them he had been here already? That he had already departed leaving his "package" in capable hands to lose suspicion?
"Excuse me, sir?" I politely beckoned the stubby officer.
"Yes ma'am? How can I help you?" he replied in a silly accent.
"Your men invade the privacy of my room and I thought it was my right to know why ..."
"Dear Madam, as you may have noticed, we got all the compartments for a man, an arms dealer to be precise. Did you by chance see him?" he asked.
"My eyes widened for a bit…. I gained my composure and replied stiffly, "Why would I look for someone like that?" I asked, my tone accusing.
The officer, who seemed to be quick with word, backtracked. He replied apologetically, "Oh no, m'lady… I was just asking in genuine, morbid curiosity…"
"Well now you know…" I said so looking at the dial from my coat.
"It seems so…" he said speculatively.
"Good day, fare you well…"
As I walked away, I waved in good hope that the officer wouldn't notice my frown of worry.
As the train stopped at its last station, Turin, I got off my carriage with two suitcases… One was mine… the other was James'. I headed over to the hotel Golden Palace Hotel. I handed his package over to him. He opened it to check its contents.
"Satisfied?" I asked, my voice emotionless.
He hummed in appreciation, while displaying a fresh batch of grenades and pistols. He took the smallest one out and looked it over. He made a show of pointing it at a man on the streets… or so I thought. He shot quickly and noiselessly. He had a camera... a spy. He was spying on us and because of that he was now dead. Not wounded or maimed. Dead.
I thought about the nice yet inquisitive, stubby officer I spoke to, on the train.
Some things are better when unknown to the others. After all, you know what they say about ignorance…
