Chapter one- Try and catch me!
Max's pov
The familiar sound of police sirens was increasing as I willed my aching feet to venture on. My wide eyes frantically swept the area, like a caged animal. The sun was descending, as if it was gliding down one giant staircase. Trees sheltered me above, hiding my existence. Shouting of cops and dogs barking told me I didn't exactly have all the time in the world.
Now if you asked me if I'd rather be hunted by wolves or those guys in blue, I would belt out wolves faster than you can blink. Wolves may be a wild animal, but aren't man sometimes like one as well? I've seen a full grown man change into a beast. Not something you want to see.
The rhythmic pound of my feet was almost comforting in a way. I pushed myself harder, coaching myself to keep on going. Sadly, the little stamina left in me, was smoldering out. I made one of my famous snap- quick decisions. Using my upper body strength, I latched my hands unto the nearest branch. I then, using leverage, swung myself up with a grunt of effort.
The bushy branch was positioned so I could peer out, but no on-lookers could spot me. My mind was racing with exits in case of emergency and how to keep still so I wouldn't be caught.
At the base, stood two young-looking cops. It was hard to make out their body shapes but they were definitely there. I smirked, I was in papers everywhere. I constantly made the front cover, updating citizens on what 'terrible' act I had done this time. You have probably seen my picture, maybe you haven't. I was 5 ft. with straight dirty blonde hair. I think I was smirking, hmm I don't know they change the picture so much. People claim that they have spotted me but c'mon people it's not like I'm Bigfoot. I had bright emerald green eyes, so bright green that I had to 'buy' contacts so no one would recognize me.
I had gotten exceedingly skinny over the years. This was the thinnest I had ever been. My ribs jutted out of my side and I could pass as a walking twig. The weirdest thing about me was my name. Maximum Ride, but I got by Max. Use my full name and you'll get punched into next week. My parents being stupid as always thought the name Maximum much like its definition was the greatest name there was. I changed my last name to Ride, no way would I ever carry my Dad's name. But that's another story for another time.
The two cops were still talking, although their voices wasn't lowered into a hush whisper, like it had the last couple of minutes, My ears perked up and I picked up their conversation.
"Sir, the whole building was burned down-"the boy with the dark hair spoke in a deep, calm voice.
The other cop looked much older with wrinkles and blonde shaggy hair. He interrupted the cop with the dark hair,
"Yes, Yes I know it was burned down. Tell me something I don't know." He rubbed his forehead in frustration, making me snicker.
It wasn't even that big of an explosion. Let me explain. One of my old 'friends' worked in this building. It was full of his life's work. He destroyed my future so I thought it would be only fair to destroy his too. Yeah I'm nice like that.
I set fire to all the papers and everything thing else. I watched the building slowly burn into the night. Don't worry, I wouldn't actually kill peopleā¦..maybe it really depends. He came in the next morning devastated at the ruin of his work.
You may want to know who this guy is.
His name is Ari and he's the one who gave me wings.
