Hello! This is my first story ever. But please don't go easy on me. It won't help me improve.

So this will be a Modern AU Bethyl story, so if you don't like then please exit now and go read elsewhere. Thanks.

Now for those who are still here, enjoy the introduction chapter!

Beth Greene sat down at her desk, exasperated. She had just sent her 4th class off to lunch, thank god. They had been wearing her down, but there was one kid who was especially tiring. His name was Danny Dixon.

In all of her three years of teaching, Beth had never met a kid quite like Danny. At first, she had thought the kid was adorable, and assumed that he would do great in her class.

On the first day of school this year, as soon as Beth had walked into the classroom to greet her students, Danny had called out "Yer pretty." to her, which had made her cheeks turn crimson. She had never had a kid say that to her before. Even though it was a bit silly to blush over, Beth couldn't help but notice how Danny was slightly different from everyone else. Not bad, but simply different. But in a good way.

It was about two months into the school year when Beth figured out how the kid really was.

Beth ended up walking into the class a bit late that day. Luckily, the kids were all sitting in their seats, nicely waiting for their teacher. Well, all of them except Danny. He was up, dancing around and spitting spitballs at the wall through a red bendy straw.

Some kids were just ignoring him, staring straight ahead. Some kids laughed and said "Shoot this next!" while pointing to posters taped on the wall. Beth stood and watched them for a few moments. A few of the kids watched her, looking back at the other kids who playing around occasionally as they could.

Danny climbed on top of a chair, and that was when Beth had it. She had started by clearing her throat loudly. When nobody responded, she decided that it would be best to yell at them.

"Ahem. CLASS." She said.

Danny whipped around quickly, staring at Beth with wide eyes and a ghostly white face. The kids who were laughing and playing along with him turned around to face her, pretending that they were doing nothing at all.

Danny stood on his chair for a few more seconds, just staring at her.

"Sit down Danny." Beth told him. He remained standing on the chair.

"Sit down Danny." She repeated. Danny finally gave in and sunk into his seat.

At lunch, Beth had a "talk" with Danny.

"Why did ya do that?" Beth asked him.

"What?" Danny asked. He sounded annoyed, but Beth didn't care how he was feeling. What he had done this morning was unexpected and uncalled for.

"The spitballs. Bein' out of your seat. You know that it's against school rules. So tell me, why do ya do it?"

"You weren't here yet. It's ok to play."

"Yeah, if you want to clean it up." Beth said, going into her teacher's storage closet, pulling out a mop, a cloth and a bucket. She handed them to Danny, who just stared at them like they were ticking time bombs that would explode at any minute.

"What 'im I supposed ta do with these?" Danny asked, still staring at them.

"Clean up the mess you made." Beth told him, "Sink is over there." She pointed to the corner of the room.

"How?"

Beth looked at him, suddenly feeling bad in a million ways. He didn't know how to clean? Didn't all little kids? Maybe he wasn't raised like that. Maybe... Beth tried to think of an excuse for this in her head. When she was little, her daddy had always made her clean up around the house. Maybe it was because he was a boy. Boys always seemed to be the ones in the family that got babied, while the girls had to clean. Maybe that's how it was in Danny's house.

"What do you mean how?" Beth asked the child.

"Do I just put water on it and wipe it away?" He asked her.

"Yes." Beth said, "Do you want to call your mom before we begin?"

"Here, I'll call my dad." He said. Beth had no idea why, but it was always "dad, dad, dad, dad" with Danny. Beth had never heard anything about a mother in his family. Maybe she was dead or something. Even though Beth's job wasn't to delve into the lives of her students, she was there just teach them, but she was dying to know more. But if she ever asked, she'd get fired. So she was slightly used to not knowing anything, even about the most mysterious children. Danny Dixon was no exception.

Then came the failing grades. Danny was doing really good in school at first, but as soon as 3rd marking period hit, his grades went downhill. He was failing tests. He never did homework.

Beth had tried calling home a few times, but nobody had ever picked up. Did this kid even have parents? Beth knows that it was a silly question to be asking herself, but she was beginning to think that Danny may have been having some major family problems at home. She knew that it was none of her business, but if it was affecting his grade, that was a problem.

Thats when Beth decided what to do. A parent teacher conference. She scrawled a small note on a piece of paper. Nothing too much, just a number, a date, and a location. And that's all that she needed to put. Of course she had put a few other words to, but they were just to simply explain why his father/mother/guardian or whoever was living with him was coming here.

After class, Beth had told Danny to stay after class for a second.

"What?" Danny snapped angrily as soon as all of the other children had left the classroom.

"Give this note your mom." Beth had accidentally said to him, since she was used to saying that to all of the other kids who have had parents or guardians come in for conferences.

"My mom is gone, miss. She left ma daddy years ago." He said simply, like that was a normal everyday thing.

Beth watched the young kid walk away, wondering exactly what was going on with him.

How did I do? I know it's short, but the chapters will get longer. The second one will be especially long.

So yeah, thanks for checking this out and please leave me a review, even something quick would work.
