Chapter one
Amu stood in her bathroom before the sink, looking at her reflection in the mirror that adorned the white wall. To the untrained eye, her face, which was artistically done with with a few shades of nude, would be considered flawless. She released another sigh as she fixed her shoulder length pink hair, into a messy bun. Her best and dearest friend, Tsukiyomi Utau, was currently sitting on the edge of her neatly made bed, glaring at her. It was, to say the least, very uncomfortable. After her desired bun was formed, she turned and faced her friend with a bright smile.
Utau's glare intensified.
The pink-haired girl smile turned into a frown as she stepped into her bedroom. To her right was the glass door leading out to the balcony that overlooked her front lawn. Draping on both sides of the doors were pink curtains with embroidery design along the edges. She sat down beside the blond and breathed out. "Utau," she said breaking the silence. "It's time to put the past behind us and move on."
"Do you think I enjoy popping by just to make your life miserable?"
"You could have fool me." She let out a soft chuckled.
Her purple eyes flickered with anger. "Because of your stubbornness, my beloved brother is dating that blond bimbo. It's sickening to watch."
"You need to give people, especially females a chance. And besides, Ikuto seems happy, you should too."
Utau abruptly stood up and fixed her fitted black dress that rode up when she was sitting. Without uttering a word, she made her way towards the white door and turned the knob. As she walked through the threshold she voiced. "You are going to dump that sissy, one way or another, and get back together with my brother." And just like that she was gone.
Amu's mouth dropped opened. The venom behind those words caused goosebumps to coat her ivory tone skin. Her body shivered momentarily. She fell back onto her bed and looked up at the ceiling, in deep thought. When will Utau process that she and Ikuto are NEVER getting back together. The mere thought is ludicrous.
"Mom! Dad! I am leaving," yelled Amu from the threshold of the main door. Her boyfriend had showed up fifteen minutes early. He did not honked nor did he sent her a message. He didn't even ring the door bell. If she hadn't gotten up to close her curtains she would not have known he was outside waiting. She closed the walnut door that has a rectangular glass running down the middle, behind her muting her parent's response. Her cheeks reddened as she spotted her boyfriend of one month, leaning on his black convertible, smiling at her. She walked down the concrete pavement that separated the groomed lawn and made her way towards him.
He stood upright as she walked past the gate and towards him. As soon as she leaned in and pecked him on the lips, he wrapped his arms around her waist and deepened the kiss. When they broke off for air, he whispered, "You look beautiful tonight." She buttoned up her pink blazer and after straightening out her white tank top that slightly covered her dark wash skinny denim. The black knee length leather boots finished the outfit off, giving it a date night chic. He then released her and opened the passenger's seat door. As soon as she got in, he closed the door and then made his way towards the driver's seat.
"So Tadase," Amu said with excitement as he revved up the engine. Why boys enjoys that is still a mystery to her. They slowly drove forward, picking up speed on the way. "Where exactly are you taking me this evening?"
Tadase flashed her his signature smile. It made him immensely happy that the only reaction he can coaxed out of her is a slight blush. He detest those crazy females he comes in contact with. But at times, he questioned whether she feels the same way about him. He replied with a hint of playfulness. "You will see when we get there."
Amu jokingly rolled her eyes. Her thoughts replayed the conversation she had earlier in her room, as she stared at the view ahead of her. The empty roads leaved her in a lull state. Ikuto hates my guts. If looks could kill, I would be dead time and again. Being in his presence is suffocating. And yet-I go out of my way to talk to him. Only to get ridiculed in the end.
"-mu? Amu!?"
Amu snapped out of her reverie and glanced at Tadase. His face was marred with worries, he replaced it with a genuine smile. She flashed him an apologetic smile. "Sorry Tadase. You were saying?" She mentally scolded herself for thinking about that immature prick. What did she ever see in him?
Tadase chuckled. "You are so cute," he said, caressing her flushed cheeks. "We are here." He turned off the engine and then unbuckled the seatbelt.
Amu stood in awe at the breathtaking restaurant before her. She beamed with excitement as she took in the intricate design. She especially like the black wood that outlined the four corners and window. The building itself was made out of cherry wood and put together exquisitely. At the top of the entrance, in big bold letters, was the name: AMOUR. She quickened her pace towards the building with Tadase a couple feet behind. The flushed colour in her face disappeared, leaving her in a pale state as she stopped dead in her tracks, a couple feet away from the doors. Exiting the double glass door was him and latched onto his right arm was his happy blond. They were so caught up in each other to notice her presence. She cleared her throat and then forced a smile. "Hey Ikuto."
Ikuto tore his eyes away from the blond and looked at her. His cerulean blue eyes instantaneously flickered with hatred, which in turn caused Amu to mentally curse herself for even acknowledging him. The atmosphere intensified with stifling tension as his eyes followed Tadase, who stopped beside Amu and held her hand. The pent up emotion personified itself into a red glow of pure rage that outlined his figure , he yanked his arm away from the blond and stormed off. The blond-haired girl bowed and then chased after him. "Ikuto! Wait for me!"
Tadase looked at the retreating couple and then back at Amu, who was staring at the ground. Even though he has never seen that guy before, he can help but ponder the murderous look that he gave him. It frightened him. His outer exterior was calm, cool and collect. "What was that?"
Amu looked up at him and smiled. "It's nothing."
"O-Kay," replied Tadase with a hint of suspicion. As much as he wanted to pry, he held back. The last thing he wanted was to drive her away. According to him, she was the missing piece to his puzzle. "Let's go."
Amu nodded her head. She followed him into the restaurant. Sorry Tadase. There are some things about me that you are better off not knowing about. She sat down in one of the chairs at the table that the waiter guided them to. She finally greeted him with a smile. "Hi. Can I have a water with lemon please?"
The waiter nodded his head.
"I will have the same thing," Tadase said as he sat down opposite Amu.
The waiter nodded his head once again and then excused himself.
Tadase watched as Amu looked around the restaurant. He noticed her emotions elevating and smiled. It always boost his ego when he turns her frown upside down. "So," he said getting her attention. "What will you be having tonight?"
"Uh." Amu opened the menu and scanned the the pages. Her eyes sparkled as it stopped at one of the options. She closed the menu and put it to the side.
"Well?" asked Tadase with curiosity. One thing he adored about her was the air of mystery that she comes with. He never mentioned it before, but that was what attracted him to her.
Amu winked at him. "You will know soon enough."
Tadase laughed with tinged cheeks. "Very well." It tortured him to no end that he can never crack her. The one thing he admired about himself is his perseverance. It has gotten him through the series of difficult times.
The waiter returned with two glasses of water with lemon. He gave one to Amu and the other to Tadase. "Are you ready to order? Or do you a couple more minutes?" He asked.
"We are ready," Tadase said, getting the waiter's attention from Amu and towards himself. "I will have the Montreal steak with mash potatoes and mixed veggie."
"And for me," Amu added, getting the waiter's attention once again. "Pan seared salmon with basmati rice."
The waiter winked at Amu causing her to blush slightly and then excused himself. Jealously flickered for a split second in Tadase's ruby red eyes. It irks him, how men are always flirting with her in his presence.
Their meal arrived thirty minutes later.
Tadase cut a piece of his steak and popped it in his mouth. His eyes lit up, it impressed him how the Japanese chefs are able to replicate an American cuisine perfectly. When he came out of his reverie, he saw Amu silently if not, forcefully eating her meal.
"Are you thinking about what happened earlier?"
"No," Amu lied as she looked at him. She hate how Ikuto still affect her to this day. She noted in her mind to put him in his place the next time they run into each other. Even though Tadase doesn't show it, she's fully aware of the strain it causing in their relationship.
He frowned slightly. Aren't couples supposed to shared their problems with their partner. She basically know all their need to know about him. The same can't be said for him though. "I got an acceptance letter from Harvard this morning." He finally said.
"Tadase, that's amazing," she replied with excitement. She had gotten her letter a month ago. The joy she felt that day when she opened it was incomprehensible. "In a couple months we will officially be Harvard freshman."
"Yeah." Then he chuckled a bit.
"Well, it's reassuring to know I won't be the only Japanese in a foreign school," she said.
Tadase reached across the table with his right hand and gave her left hand a squeezed as he looked into her honey coloured eyes, fondly. "Me too Amu."
Their evening came to an end, when Tadase pulled up before her house. He got out of his car and made his way towards the passenger side and opened the door. She blushed as she took his hand and allowed him to help her onto her feet. He then escorted her to her door. They stared into each other eyes, neither uttering a word or movement.
"Well," Amu said. The romantic silence tugged at her heartstrings and she hated it. It brings out her bold, rash side. Something that Ikuto took delight in. "I will see you at school tomorrow."
Tadase leaned in and kissed her on the lips. "Sweet dreams my fair lady. See you tomorrow." Then he took off.
Her heart skipped a nervous beat.
