I do not own this song nor Merlin.
I hate my train of thought….
Sound the bugle now - play it just for me
As the seasons change - remember how I used to be
Now I can't go on - I can't even start
I've got nothing left - just an empty heart
He was alone. There was nobody left. They had all died, many hundreds of years ago. Gwen, dear Gwen, she had died in her sleep having accomplished what Arthur had hardly dare dream of. Albion. Magic had been legalized (with the obvious exception of dark magic) and all of the kingdoms had united. Guinevere had left with a mighty legacy to her name.
I'm a soldier - wounded so I must give up the fight
There's nothing more for me - lead me away...
Or leave me lying here
Gwaine, Elyan, and Percival had died during the last great battle between Camelot and Odin's kingdom. All three had been slain by Odin's son, Edmund, with the aid of a nameless sorcerer.
Sound the bugle now - tell them I don't care
There's not a road I know - that leads to anywhere
Without a light I fear that I will stumble in the dark
Lay right down - decide not to go on
Merlin was now alone. It had been over 400 years since he had last seen Arthur. And now…it was all Merlin could do to keep watch over Avalon, serving as her guardian until destiny saw fit to take him as well. Because, despite his begging, Arthur had gone where it was impossible for Merlin to follow. Merlin would lay down at night, and dream of Camelot. Of old Gaius who had also died peacefully, and of times where he was happy, not a single regret weighing his heart.
Then from on high - somewhere in the distance
There's a voice that calls, "Remember who you are"
If you lose yourself - your courage soon will follow
Sometimes, when he was on the banks of Avalon, Merlin would hear his friends, shouting barely heard encouragements. Often, they gave him strength, but other times, such as now, they only increased his longing to be with them.
So be strong tonight - remember who you are
Yeah you're a soldier now - fighting in a battle
To be free once more - yeah, that's worth fighting for
But whenever those feeling reached him, he would shove them down, calling upon his magic and dragonlord abilities to give him strength. But no matter how hard Merlin tried, there was always a yearning to be reunited with his family. Sometimes it was so strong he would put himself to sleep for years on end, trying to keep insanity from catching up to him.
But sometimes you cannot outrun it...
