Are Your Eyes Yellow?

--

John Winchester rubbed his forehead. It had been approximately six months since Mary died and the pain that kept bubbling inside him hadn't ceased yet. He wondered if it would ever stop. Mary had been a wonderful woman; she hadn't deserved to die. And on the ceiling of all things! He shivered when he recalled that horrible night when he'd heard Mary's scream coming up from Sammy's room. It was a scream filled with terror. He'd gotten there too late; way too late. Mary was on the ceiling and a second later, in flames. Red hot flames that smothered her.

He shook his head firmly, trying not to think about it. He had two sons that needed him; needed him because she died. Sometimes he blamed himself for not coming up sooner in the nursery. Sometimes after that night, many times, Sam and Dean questioned him why the house was up in flames, did Mum come out alive, all those questions that were so painful to answer. They were still so young. Maybe he'd tell them when they were older. Much older. They didn't need to bear this terrible burden.

"SAMMY!! YOU GET BACK HERE AND GIVE ME BACK MY AMULET!!"

John heard stomping outside the door as Dean chased Sammy around and around the house screaming like a stuck pig. They were so happy; so much like brothers. They shouldn't know about the paranormal. They shouldn't know about vampires, demons, shtrigas, etc. Once John had seen a shtriga inside Sammy's room slowly sucking out his life force. And Dean was supposed to be watching over him; to make sure he was safe. John didn't talk much to Dean after that. It happened two months ago. He'd started to talk to Dean again then.

"HAHAHA YOU CAN'T CATCH ME!!"

There was a scream of outrage coming from Dean. Screaming. That was something that John never really wanted to hear again. It reminded him of the paranormal creatures he hunted after Mary's death. The way the victims of the creatures screams were unbearable. It was even more unbearable to have heard Mary's terrified screams as she was burned alive.

There he was thinking about Mary again. He really should stop. The more he thought about her, the more the pain grew inside him. And he wanted that to stop. But it didn't stop him from wanting to avenge Mary's death. That was why he was hunting. He needed to hunt; to kill all those creatures that needed to be killed.

Even though he didn't want his sons to be involved in any way he knew he had to train them. To become hunters like him. It was a dangerous job and the risk of any of his sons getting hurt pained him a lot. But it would have been Mary's wish for her boys to become hunters just like herself. So they could defend themselves, help others. Of course he wasn't expecting them to start hunting in such a young age, perhaps when they were older. Perhaps, maybe, they could fight together; never separating. But that might never be possible. He knew one day that he would go off and leave them because he had unfinished business with the yellow-eyed demon whose real name was Azazel.

"DADDY CAN WE GO TO THE PARK? YOU PROMISED!!"

John stared at the sweet innocent face of Sammy and smiled. "Of course, Sammy," he said and ruffled Sammy's brown hair until it was all frizzy.

"DEANIE WE'RE GOING TO THE PARK!! AND I HAVVE YOURR AMULET!! NEH, NEH, NEH, NEH, NEEEEEH, NEH!"

There were long streams of cursing coming from behind the door.
