It's set after "No Man Left Behind", i.e. after Emma uses her powers to alter Jesse's memory…

--

It had been two days since they had gotten Brennen out of that camp. Two days since Emma had used her powers in a way she never had before. The look on Jesse's face after she'd done it still echoed in her mind. Etched into her subconscious like a photograph; but this was one image she wished she never had to see again. In that moment, that instant when he looked at her, all she had seen in his eye's was fear. She could feel it radiating out of him. So, she made a decision to do something she had once promised herself she'd never do. She took it away. Wiped the memory from his mind, gone forever from his history, as if it had never even happened.

But, it had happened, and now at least to her things would never be the same, because she had used her powers on one of them, she had changed him.

"Emma" a soft voice shook her from her thoughts.

"Huh" she looked up only to be met by the warm eyes of Jesse, suddenly those warm, soft eyes were replaced by ones that were full of fear, doubt and unanswered questions as her own memories returned to their constant assault on her subconscious. Her eyes flickered down coming to rest on the ground beside Jesse's feet. She couldn't even look him in the eye now, she didn't deserve to, not after what she'd done.

"Are you ok?" Jesse lowered himself to sit beside her, the concern was evident in his voice, "You haven't been yourself since we got back…"

All Emma could feel was his deep desire to fix whatever problem it was she had. She knew he would go to the end of the earth just to make her feel safe and happy, once upon a time that desire had made her feel so secure, but now it just added to her guilt and forced her heart to sink lower.

"I…." she tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. She didn't know what to say, or how to even explain the war raging inside her head.

"Em," Jesse's voice came again, "Do you wanna talk about it?"

"About what?" Emma's voice shook and her gaze darted upwards searching his eyes. Did he know?

Maybe, it hadn't worked…thoughts raced rapidly through her mind, as she desperately tried to read him, searching for anything that might have slipped through the cracks of the mental wall she had built around that memory.

Jesse smiled at her; "… About whatever it is that's keeping you trapped inside that head of yours."

She sighed and shook her head, "No" she muttered. He didn't know, and he never would, he couldn't.

"Ok" Jesse conceded as he stood up, "but if you do…"

"I know," Emma forced a smile as she looked up to meet his gaze, "…you're ready to listen"

"Exactly" Jesse returned her smile and kissed her on the head, and as he did Emma felt her heart break, …what had she done.
