Summary: AU - Cloud, Aerith and a conversation about video games. Short but I needed to get this out of my system.
Of the Importance of Healers
When Aerith Gainsborough came back from her work at the flower shop she owned in town, it was to her boyfriend sprawled on the sofa playing video games. Judging by the empty soda cans and snack packs he had been there for quite some time.
"Those stupid games again!" she exclaimed on a mock exasperated tone, kissing him hello.
"Hey! They ain't stupid!" he protested. "Wanna try?" he offered.
"No thanks, I'm pretty tired, I think I'm going to make some tea and read a bit in the bedroom." She smiled and ruffled his blond hair before retreating to the kitchen.
In the middle of her reading Aerith heard a loud crash followed by a frustrated growl coming from the living room. She quickly set her book down and rushed there. There was Cloud, practically eating his controller while the TV screen displayed these dreadful words.
GAME OVER
She chuckled lightly and wrapped her arms around him from behind. "Calm down, it's just a game." she whispered in his hair.
"But that's so frustrating! That thing always gets when I'm THIS close to beating it!" he exclaimed holding up his thumb and forefinger close together. "That was the fifth time!"
Aerith looked at the controller in Cloud's hand. "May I try?" she asked softly.
"You?!!" He asked dumbfounded. "You wouldn't last a second!" he turned around and looked at her in order to try and see if she was really serious. She had never been more serious about anything in her life. "I could surprise you, you know." "Ok… suits yourself" He held out the controller to her and motioned for her to sit down next to him.
Fifteen minutes later the familiar victory tune could be heard in the apartment. Aerith was beaming proudly and Cloud was starring at the screen, mouth agape, unable to express his thoughts. "Woa.. Woa… how the hell did you do that?" She smiled and, after setting the game to pause, handed him the controller back with a kiss.
"My secret: always have a healer in your team" she explained "healers, white mages, priestesses, whatever you call them, are often pictured as weak women. They have weak physical attacks, low resistance and even weak offensive spell. But," she said motioning to the white clad girl on the screen. "She is the only one that can make sure your team-mates don't die from their wounds. When in a long fight just cast a general healing spell anytime you can rather than trying to wound the boss at all costs. You know what they say: better safe than sorry."
"So… what you mean is: all I have to do is to make sure she does not die and I'll be fine?"
"Yeah, something along those lines." Aerith answered as she slowly got up from the couch.
Cloud seemed to ponder on this piece of information for a while and then
"Wait! Aerith, how comes you are so knowledgeable about video games?!"
She gave him no answer, instead she just giggled and skipped happily to the bedroom, book in hand.
