Scientific Explanation (Or Minute by Minute)

"So, you see," Spencer Reid was explaining nervously, "although these calculations are not exactly quantifiable, it was becoming exponentially more difficult to keep myself from kissing you with every passing minute we spent together. Human nature is such that eventually I was bound to give in." He still received no reply, so he pushed on, "As I have said, I care about you very deeply, and I have analyzed our compatibility and come up with favorable results. If you'd like to read my report on my findings, I can e-mail it to you."

Jennifer Jareau smiled at the man in amusement. "That's not necessary, Spence." She looked over his nervous smile, his disheveled hair, and his crooked purple sweater. "I would love to build a romance with you, but I have Henry and Will to consider."

That only set Reid off for a moment. "I am not naturally adept with children like Prentiss or Morgan, but I have a steep learning curve, and I have no doubts of my ability to learn how to teach and play with Henry within a few minutes, if you tell me the basics. As for your ex-boyfriend, I am not the type of man who inspires jealousy from ex-boyfriends. Ever. Although, that might be due to the fact that I have never actually had a serious relationship. I think I need to think over the correlation there."

"No, you're fine. Stop thinking," J. J. laughed, placing a hand gently on Spencer's arm. "You're right, I'm just making excuses. I don't like being vulnerable because it means I might get hurt. Sometimes getting hurt is worth it though, and we both deserve the happiness that giving us a chance would bring."

Reid twitched nervously. "I think I am happy to hear you say that?"

"Yes, you are," J. J. assured, letting herself laugh at the slightly younger man. "And I have to say, I am impressed that you kissed me and told me how you feel about me on your own."

Reid looked at the floor. "Rossi and Morgan told me if I didn't, they would. Tell you, I mean. Not kiss you. At least, I hope that isn't what they meant."

J. J. laughed and checked her watch, "Let's go pick Henry up from daycare. We can get some take-out, and you can practice playing with Henry while we decide what kind of thank you gift I should send Morgan and Rossi." She wrinkled her nose to show Reid that she was kidding, and then linked her arm through his and led him out of the bullpen.

Reid followed her with a small smile on his face, pondering about the explanations for his increased heart rate, increased body temperature, and release of positive endorphins.
