Petunia didn't always hate her sister, there was once a time where Petunia was very protective and loving towards Lily. There was a time where they used to play with dolls together and have tea parties. They used to roll down hills and searched for each other's flowers. Lily had always done everything that Petunia did. Things changed the moment Lily turned eleven. She became friends with a wizard and had her Hogwarts letter.
And Petunia didn't.
It had always been Petunia that got everything first. And Lily had always looked up to Petunia for advice. But with this, Lily didn't need her advice she had Severus for that. Lily didn't need Petunia at all.
Petunia didn't know how to cope with that.
She called Lily a 'freak' and ignored her because Lily no longer needed her. Petunia was supposed to guide Lily through life! How could she possibly help Lily, if her sister came to her about not being able to cast a spell? How could she possibly help with Lily's bullies, if her bullies were somewhere in a far away magical castle? What kind of big sister was she if she couldn't protect Lily?
It had always been a concern for Lily first before the resentment came. Why did Lily have to be the witch? Petunia was obviously the better fit than her. Lily was just a copycat brat, and it was Petunia who was the original one!
Now Lily was the witch in the family, and Petunia felt left out. It was like her parents forgotten that they had another daughter. One that needed love and affection just like Lily did. Just because she lacked the beauty and the talent didn't mean they could just ignore her! It was alway Lily this and Lily that! Where was Petunia in all their talk? Had she somehow vanish from their minds?
Petunia was over the fact that she had a witch for a sister. She longed and waited for the time when she was old enough to leave.
And never turn back.
