Perpendicular Parallels
-----------------------------------------------
James sat three rows from the front, smack in the middle. After his Head Boy speech, he had sought refuge with his friends and was now lounging comfortably, Remus and Peter on either side of him, Sirius next to Remus. He should have been focusing on Dumbledore's eloquent, urgent speech. The real world was full of dangers, he was saying. James should have been listening. Instead, he was watching the curtain of red hair swaying in front of him.
Yes, Lily Evans, Head Girl, brilliant, muggleborn, girlfriend (finally!) of James Potter was sitting directly in front of the affor mentioned boy. She looked lovely today. Her radiant red hair dusting her shoulders and those eyes-Merlin! those eyes! Those eyes, which he couldn't see right now as she, like the wonderful, perfect student she was, sat listening intently to Dumbledore's words. He had to admit, the crimson trim of her black robe clashed horribly with her hair, but James thought it looked rather lovely, Sirius thought James must be rather ill.
"Lily!" he hissed softly at her. Her head turned sharply; she was annoyed. He gave her the charming smile that had eventually won her over, and she smiled, shaking her head slightly as she turned to face Dumbledore again.
Before they knew it, graduation was over. They were adults. James followed her red hair through a crowd, toward Dumbledore. He choked on a laugh as she gave him a hug. Dumbledore looked rather surprised, himself.
-----------------------------------------------
Harry stood three rows from the back, off to the left. The speeches seemed endless: Head Boy, Head Girl, Minister of Magic, Headmistress. Harry was between Ron and Hermione, with Bill and George on either side. McGonagall was talking, something about the glorious hope for the future, and those who had given their lives to ensure it. During a moment of silence for Colin and the others who had fallen, Harry's eyes found long shinning red hair.
Ginny's head was bowed respectfully, the red trim of her robe just visible as her hair parted over her shoulders. She looked stunning, very different from the shy ten year old Harry had once known. Feeling his eyes on her, she turned her head to smile at him. A tear leaked out of her eye; Colin had been a friend, not a terribly close one, but a friend, none the less. Ron caught Harry staring at his little sister and cleared his throat, though softly. Hermione shot him a look, and smiled at Harry, even as Ginny glared playfully at Ron.
Before they knew it, graduation was over. They were adults now, all of them. Harry followed her red hair through a crowd, toward Dumbledore's tomb. He watched as she sat softly on the ground in front of the tomb. A moment later, she stood, turned to Harry, and stretched out her hand.
Finally, it was time for the boy with messy black hair and the girl with hair like flames to live. Maybe not always happily, maybe not forever, but they got to live. And live they did.
