Prompt: Birth
Definition: The beginning or coming into existence of something.
He was so tired. For once in his miserable life, Severus Snape had thought that he might get a good night sleep. Alas, fate was against him. A door had appeared next to his bed the moment he entered his bedroom.
Armed with fury and his wand, Severus turned the doorknob, silently promising to curse those blasted twins into oblivion if this was their doing.
The door opened with a prolonged squeak and he hastily cast a Lumos. The girl on the bed looked like a newborn babe, so innocent and fair was she.
She did not breathe but clutched a rose to her pale breast. It took only a minute for Snape to discover the Wiggenweld potion and only a second for him to tip it into her mouth.
For one moment she did not stir, and Snape feared that he would have to wake Dumbledore with a body in tow.
But then she gagged and her eyes shot open. She spotted him and grabbed his hand, causing him to drop the bottle. It fell to the floor with a crash that made them both wince.
"Where is he?" The women cried, her eyes wide. "Where has Tom gone?"
Severus frowned and gazed down at her with great unease. Had he stumbled upon a madwoman? The girl bit her lip and pulled herself to her feet. She proceeded to fall into his arms.
"Please!" She sobbed, her fingers tightening around the fabric of his shirt. "You must stop Tom Riddle!"
Severus felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, and his voice became soothing when he asked if she wanted tea.
A cup of tea was placed in front of her and Snape smirked as he tucked the bottle of Veritaserum he kept back under his pillow. "Tell me, what is your name?"
The cup of tea trembled in its saucer when she set it down.
"Hermione Granger," she whispered, her brow furrowed.
Snape glanced at her. He did not recognize that name.
"Tell me; how do you know Tom Riddle?" It hurt his throat to say even that name.
"We were friends, until he..." She trailed off, her eyes taking on a glimmer of fear.
"Until?"
The girl put a hand to her throat before looking up quickly.
"You used Veritaserum!" She cried, her tone accusing.
Snape smirked.
"It was necessary," he purred, stalking up to her. "When you spoke the former name of the Dark Lord, I could not help but be concerned."
Hermione glared at him.
"You can't use that on students!" She hissed, biting her cheek.
Snape's expression turned to one of interest. "You are a student?"
Hermione stood, knocking over the teacup as she did so.
"Of course I am!" She cried, tears beginning to form in her eyes. "This is Hogwarts, isn't it? Where's Headmaster Dippet?"
Snape frowned. "That man died years ago."
Hermione swallowed thickly before spinning around and racing back into the room she had been imprisoned in.
