Just a little Bering and Wells drabble I posted over on tumblr. Enjoy. :)
PROMPT: Myka takes HG to the fair.
"This is the fair?" Helena asked, looking on at the massive crowd, numerous food vendors, and, most shocking, the giant mechanical structures slinging people to and fro in the air.
Myka chuckled, looping her arm through Helena's and pulling her towards the entrance gate, tickets already in hand. "What were you excepting?" she asked, genuinely curious to know.
"Well, the last fair I went to was the Chicago World's Fair in 1893," Helena mused.
Myka laughed, the musical sound sending waves of pleasure down Helena's spine. She did so love to hear that woman laugh. "This is a bit different than the Chicago World's Fair, I'm afraid. But you'll love it. I promise."
They happened to be in Minnesota on a mission just as the Minnesota State Fair, arguably the most grand state fair in all of America, was in full swing. They'd snagged and bagged the artifact they'd been searching for—a rouge mall security guard at the Mall of America had gotten his hands on a Segway full of mystical juju—earlier that day. Their flight back to South Dakota wasn't until the next morning, so Myka had insisted that they hit the fair. How often do they get to do something outside of Univille as a couple? Almost never. She planned to make the most of their precious time alone.
Myka studied Helena's expression as they stood in line to ride the ferris wheel. Myka figured starting with something Helena was familiar with would ease her into the fair experience.
"Are you sure this is safe, darling?" Helena asked, unusual trepidation apparent in her voice as they began to move forward in the line.
"It's safe, I promise," Myka replied. "I've ridden ferris wheels hundreds of times. Didn't you ride the ferris wheel at the Chicago World's Fair?"
Helena grinned. "I was… otherwise detained."
Myka raised an eyebrow, not sure she wanted to know what that meant. She was saved from having to ask as the ride operator guided them into one of the bench seats and secured the safety bar. The ride lurched into motion without warning, causing Helena to screech in surprise and grip the railing tightly as they climbed higher and higher. Myka reached out and gripped Helena's hand, squeezing it gently in reassurance. She offered her a smile, which relaxed Helena.
The sun was just setting as they climbed their way to the top of the giant wheel, casting brilliant oranges and pinks across the sky. Each time they were high in the sky, Myka pointed out landmarks. But Helena only had eyes for Myka. Her usually dark hair appeared golden in the setting sun's rays. The look of utter joy on her face melted Helena's heart. Again.
The ride glided to a stop as they were nearly at the top to allow others to exit the ride. Myka pouted. "Awe, it's over. Can we ride again?"
Helena couldn't help herself in that moment. She leaned over and kissed her wife of ten years atop the ferris wheel. Oh, yes, she rather liked the fair.
