Chapter One

"Under the Angel's Wing"

Nick sat with his chin in his hand, staring out the window. All he could hear was the couple silent trails of feet through the halls of kids who were late to class and the faint whispers of words between jocks and gossipers who sat next to each other. He rolled his tongue around in his mouth, making lists in his mind as his thoughts scrambled around in a whirlpool of thoughts that never ceased their constant nag of words that seemed to echo in from every direction about him. A pair of footsteps, loud and furious down the halls, burst into the classroom, sending a small, blond-headed boy into the room. He was obviously shorter than Nick himself, with blonde hair that stood up short and into a faux-hawk that came forward with deep brown layers that edged his roots. His thick glasses hid his pale green eyes, and he had a great sense of style to boot. He wore a white collared shirt that emphasized his thin figure, tight on the arms to loose on the wrists with a tight black vest with an unusual design on over the collared shirt, tight black slacks with a studded belt, and those fuzzy looking bracelets and bangles that covered his thin, pale wrists. Nick raised an eyebrow at the boy, he had never seen him before. Nick began to pity him. Not only was he late to Dr. Robbins' class, but he had everyone whispering about him already.

Nick leaned over slightly to his tall, brazen friend who sat next to him. "Warrick," Nick asked, glancing to Warrick quickly but not taking his eyes off the kid once more. "Who's the kid?"

Warrick was looking at him too, leaning in close to whisper as the teacher was distracted. "New kid apparently," Warrick whispered.

"I feel sorry for him, poor guy," Nick added as he sat back in his seat.

Warrick raised his eyebrows quickly. "Yeah, me too, you know how goes down in this school with the newbies."

"I know that fact all too well, my friend, all too well."

"I'm sorry, Dr. Robbins," the boy began. "Dr. Grissom wanted a word with me and he made me late to class."

Robbins simply laughed a loud chuckle. "Always Grissy, always Grissy," he laughed. He rose a hand and clapped it over the kid's shoulder, who seemed to wince in pain. "It's okay, kid. Take a seat." The newbie rose and shook his blond head as he looked around the classroom for a seat. One jock in the front took the seat next to him and flipped it over, being obvious about his dislike to the blond boy. The boy ducked a little, trying to avoid the glance the jock gave him. Robbins stuck his tongue out at the kid and then directed the blond-headed boy to the back. Nick sat up, giving a sarcastically bright smile and a little wave to both Robbins and the blond newbie.

"You can sit here," Nick said, waving to the seat to his left side, the one closest to the wall and window. Warrick ducked his head and the blond boy looked to his feet as he stepped up to the first of the steps up the classroom.

"Thanks for the save, man" the boy whispered as he walked past Nick and sat.

"Anytime," Nick said, turning to the blond boy. "I'm Nick. Glad to have ya under my wing, man."

"Greg," the boy said, glancing up at Nick with a gentle smile and a kind of cute laugh.

"I was new here once. No worries," Nick said, giving a gentle laugh.

"Is it nice?" Greg asked, looking at him.

"Yeah, nice as Hell's fire chasing after you like a buzz saw to wood. Definitely nice, ya know?."

Greg sighed stuck out his tongue and sighed. "Thought so, damn. Well, at least I know, thanks." Nick simply nodded as Warrick leaned over to see the newbie.

"Yo," Warrick said. "The name's Warrick."

"Cools," Greg smirked and Nick looked to the front of the class again. Nick couldn't help thinking about the way Greg said "cools." What a dork. He smiled.
