He'll Never Know

It would later be called the worst battle in all the history of wizards. Nearly three hundred witches and wizards would not return home. The members of the Order thought the war would be over when Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort clashed for the last time and killed each other. But when Albus Dumbledore saw nearly a thousand Death Eaters at the gates of Hogwarts, he knew the war had only begun.

He summoned the Order at once. They all stood in his office, their faces gaunt and pale. Among these people were Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. It had been nearly two years since they left Hogwarts and less than two months since Harry had died. Dumbledore looked up at the solemn faces and spoke.

"Look out that window," he said in a low, but clear whisper. "There you see Lord Voldemort's supporters, an army of a thousand witches and wizards. Now look around you. How many do you see?" He paused briefly before continuing. "There are a mere hundred of us here. But know this, good will triumph over evil. Do not lose hope, it is our greatest weapon. In this room are some of the most powerful witches and wizards of this age. But without hope, you are nothing. So don't give up, because we can win this. Just believe!" By the end of this short speech, several people had tears in their eyes. They all filed out and went down to the entrance to meet their fate.

It had already been a couple of hours and Hermione had watched comrade after comrade fall. Hermione barely had time to breathe before she had to dodge another curse sent by another cloaked figure with it's face hidden from view. "Mudblood," the Death Eater spat. He pulled his hood back to reveal the cruel face of Draco Malfoy. "I have long awaited this day, Granger. Say hello to Potter for me." He raised his wand again. But Hermione was too quick; she disarmed the and muttered 'Stupefy'. She wiped her face with the sleeve of her torn robes. She looked around for Ron, hoping he was alright. She scanned the carnage and spotted him in a clearing.

There he was, standing in midst of the chaos. He looked up at her with a sad smile and he mouthed the words 'I love you'. She squinted wondering if she just imagined it. No, she couldn't of. He loved her, she knew it. Those words had been what she wanted to hear since the day she met him. And at last, the time had come. She grinned and her lips made to respond when a jet of green light streamed past her and hit him with deadly aim. His limp body crumpled to the ground. His unblinking eyes glazed and then, as if the angels were giving Ron a last tribute, the gray clouds broke and sunshine filtered through, shining a spotlight on his still body.

"Crucio!" A red jet of light caught Hermione in the side and she collapsed. Her entire body exploded with pain, but it didn't matter anymore, he would never know. She never got past the word I.

End.
