Jack tucked his helmet under his arm and walked out towards the hanger waiting area. "So Captain Carter," began Jack.
Carter sprang to her feet and saluted him smartly.
Jack shook his head. "You're probably gonna be on my team, Carter. I'm not the uptight Colonel that I used to be, so can we lose the formalities?"
Carter nodded her head slowly all the while giving the Colonel an assessing gaze.
"This way," said Jack leading her out of the building. "You mentioned that you served in the Persian Gulf War."
"Yes sir, over 100 hours in enemy air space."
"I've heard rumours that you think you can fly practically anything."
"I'd like to think so sir. I have flown fifteen different types of aircraft including helicopters. It all comes down to basic engineering and …"
"Well then, we're gonna take a little ride and you can drive." Jack watched the Captains eyes widen as she turned the corner passed the hanger doors and spotted the aircraft on the tarmac.
"That's … . Are we ? Am I …"
"Yes Captain," said Jack lazily. "That's an F-22 Raptor prototype. You're flying it and I want your opinion about the design once we're done."
She nodded her head smartly, but Jack noted the excited grin on her face as she put her helmet on.
She had a wider grin on her face when she took her helmet off after the flight. "That was the most fun I've had in months, sir. Thank you for giving me the opportunity."
Jack returned her grin. Flying fast always put him into a good mood and he had no reservations about the Captain's flying abilities now. She had taken the plane through an impressive set of manoeuvres testing the planes abilities.
A pair of scientists – both bespectacled and wearing white lab coats, hurried up with note pads and recording equipment.
"I'm Jake Smith, sir and this is Peter Roberts. So what did you think of the prototype? Any suggestions for design improvements?"
Jack nodded his head. "The canopy needs to be moved a few inches, visibility isn't the best."
"Also," added Carter. "Aerodynamics could be improved with a few slight modifications. The stabilator needs a bit of refining and the vertical stabilizer needs to be shifted back a bit more. I think the wings leading edge needs some adjustments and I agree with the Colonel about the visibility problem for the pilot. The canopy needs to move back about six or seven inches. Otherwise it's a fantastic machine. It's much more agile than the YF-23."
Jack handed his helmet over to another airman and signed the necessary paperwork while listening to Carter chat with the scientists. Five mintues later he led her back to the change rooms.
"So, Captain. I've seen you train. I've read your records and I have to say I'm impressed with your flying abilities. You did well, Captain. Welcome to my team."
"I'm officially on SG-1, sir? I can travel through the Stargate?"
"Yup, Captain. You have officially made it, despite you being a scientist."
