Cosette paved nervously, fidgeting with the tight strings of her bodice. The day had finally came, she was marrying Marius Pontmercy. It had been over a year since they began seeing each other in the garden at Rue Plummet, but neither of them were the same person they had been back then. Marius' close encounter with death had changed both of them. Cosette had become far less naive, her eyes were opened to the harsh realities of the world. Also, in the past few days, Cosette had learned more about the things that went on between a husband and wife. The whole experience had been quite awkward. Her father had sat down at the foot of her bed and began explaining, in an awkward stutter what she would be expected to do on her wedding night. After finishing he stood and wished her goodnight before leaving.
Cosette didn't sleep that night. It wasn't that she was completely naive to the events that would occur, the girls in the convent had often talked about it. They made it sound awful saying men would force themselves upon you if you refused, and that they became cruel and harsh. But then, she remembered who she was marrying. Marius would never do anything to hurt her, he loved her, he was gentle and kind. There was only one fear she had now, what if he looked at her and found her ugly? What if he wanted nothing it do with her? She tried her best to clear these thoughts from her head. Whatever happened tomorrow night was the will of God, and God clearly wanted them together. After all, he had led them through all the struggles they had encountered and now, finally they could join as one.
Her heart raced as Marius' grandfather took her to line up for the procession. Cosette gazed over her shoulder and saw her father right behind her. A gentle smile lay on his aging face. Seeing him helped her relax a bit, and as the doors opened she looked up, and her gaze met that of her darling Marius. Slowly, she felt the world around her slip away. Any fears, or worries she had before were gone, all she saw was him.
Marius waited in a tiny room off the side of the church. If Courfeyrac was still alive he would be here with him as his best man, but that was not the case. His hands were very clammy, Is that normal? He thought as he paced anxiously. Marius could feel his heart beating within his chest. He was marrying Cosette, this almost felt unreal. He couldn't help but think how far they had come. Just a year ago they had been silly children gawking over each other, now they were being wed.
He blushed thinking of what would happen tonight. He was honestly nervous, but those nerves mixed with excitement. Marius could only imagine how beautiful Cosette would look. She was an angel to him. Her beautiful porcelain skin, her long, thick, brown hair, and her deep blue eyes that could put him in a trance. He imagined himself holding her in his harms, after tonight, she would be all his. But what if she found him ugly? Marius was mostly concerned about the scars on his chest from the barricade, and the fact that he was permanently thin from years of starvation. Cosette was so beautiful and perfect, how could she possibly find him beautiful?
He was snapped back to reality as an alter boy knocked on the door. "It is time Monsiuer," he said softly. Marius made his way to the alter, all the eyes in the room followed him, but soon they would be on Cosette, for she would be much more of a sight then him. His heart nearly stopped as he saw Cosette. Oh, how did they expect him to just stand there and wait for her to get to him. Marius wanted to run to his beautiful bride and take her in his arms. But if course, he couldn't do that, so he waited, watching her as she got closer to him.
