Meeting one's god was serious business. Extremely serious. So serious that, if one didn't comply with that god's every wish, one would end up dead. Hidan didn't exactly relish the though of death, so he decided to go along with the meeting with Jashin- making sure to bring along a handy human sacrifice. His first few weeks into the religion were always the worst, another worshipper had told him, and he was nervous as hell.
Bowing before his god, Hidan laid the sacrifice at the deity's feet. "Jashin-sama, I have brought you a sacrifice," he said reverently. "Please accept it as a token of my servitude."
"Hidan." Jashin's voice was low and rumbling. "Listen to me."
"Yes, my Lord."
"I have granted you immortal life." Unable to believe his ears, Hidan nearly disobeyed the laws and raised his head to stare at his Lord. Surely he had heard wrong...? "But, there are certain guidelines you must follow."
"Yes, my Lord," he repeated. "Please, tell me."
"First. I require blood sacrifices. Two a week, if not a day. You must follow the ritual laws precisely. You know these."
"I do, my Lord," Hidan replied.
"Second, and most important. There are only three ways for you to die. One is disobeying my laws. The others- and you must be sure to remember this, my young disciple- are running into a pole and being kicked in the behind. If these two things should happen to you, it will result in instantaneous death."
Hidan narrowed his eyes, confused. "My Lord, doesn't that seem a bit-"
"There is but one way to prevent these deaths from occurring. You must keep something shiny on your person at all times."
"Shiny?"
"Yes. Shiny."
"Does my scythe count, my Lord?"
"No."
"If I run into a tree without something shiny, will I die?"
"No."
"If I hit my head, will I die?"
"No."
"Does my shiny hair count as something shiny?"
"No."
"Oh." Hidan looked down, biting his lip. Gods could be very picky. It was almost annoying. But! He had pledged his very being to his Lord, Jashin, and he would fulfill every one of his wishes until Jashin-sama saw it fit to remove him from the world. "Yes, my Lord."
"Go. Go and preach my laws to those around you. Find me worthy sacrifices."
"Yes, Jashin-sama!"
To this day, Hidan has never removed the shiny silver Jashin symbol from around his neck. To all who ask, it is merely a symbol of his devotion. But he and Jashin know. It is not just that. It is a way to forestall death.
Shiny things can save your life.
