TRIGGER WARNING: DIVORCE

Hold my hand one last time before you go.

"I'm sorry."

When those piercing words escaped his lips she knew what it meant – it meant only one thing and that was the end of their relationship.

She must be a fool if she never recognized her husband's gradual change. His smile, his gaze, his aura – everything was suddenly different. On the day she saw him that way, she knew that he was leaving her grasp. Ever so slowly like a droplet from a faucet and once the droplet falls it shall make ripples on the water below and reach until the end of the vast body of water.

"Why? Why now when everything was already perfect?" betrayal, hurt, anger – there were so much emotions in her tone that he could not understand what certain feeling was most prominent.

Hikaru lowered his gaze, unable to look at his wife in the eye. He loved her – yes he loved her so much however that was all in the past. Right now, he loves someone else. "I'm so sorry, Tsukiko." There was evident guilt in his tone however they both knew that although guilty he has no intention of loving her once more.

"Hikaru…" there was a short pause from her as tears began to stream down her face. Her voice was shaky – her fingers and shoulders were trembling as she quivered in her wheelchair. "I love you, so much."

Just one last time, before you completely leave me – tell you love me.

"…"

"Hikaru."

"…"

"Please—"

"I'm sorry. I can't return what you said anymore, if I do I'd simply lie to myself and to you." He said as he looked at her straight in the eye. His heart felt as if it was torn apart – seeing his wife in such a broken state, her ashen locks all disheveled, her forehead dripping beads of sweat, and her cheeks stained with tears.

"No! Tell me you love me! I don't care if you don't anymore – just let me hear you say those words again! Tell it to me like the time we first fell in love with each other!" She knew she was becoming demanding and out of character, but who could stay like themselves when suddenly the love of their life that they're married to suddenly tell them that they have found someone else that they love.

"… I love you." It was so cold – there was no hint of warmth at all however it drew a smile on the woman's face.

"Stay with me for a few more days – or maybe even weeks. Please – we need to fix this; our sons can't see us in this kind of state." She said as she lowered her gaze. Her fingers playing with each other as her sad smile turned into a frown. She bit her lip as she forced herself to smile like how she always smiles.

Hikaru simply nodded. She was his wife after all; it's been probably twenty years so being with her for a few more days wouldn't be a problem.

"I'm so sorry, Tsukiko."

"I'm so sorry, Hikaru."

"I wish I could've been a better lover to you."

Days passed until it turned to weeks. They fought, their voices echoed throughout the house – tears shed and things fell apart more day by day.

Perhaps, there was not even an ounce of hope for this love. It truly has withered.

Tsukiko looked at the papers on the desk, her slender fingers holding the pen with anger and frustration; her fingers were trembling that it seemed as if the pen would split in half – her usual penmanship was gone as the way she wrote was shaky. She forced herself not to cry in order for the papers not to get wet but even so her tears fell like how autumn leaves fall from their branches.

As soon as the papers were sign Hikaru organized the papers in the envelope and placed it in his bag. He grabbed his luggage and with one last look at his wife he smiled, "Thank you, for everything."

Tsukiko did not spare him a look, there was bitterness in her heart – looking at him would just further worsen her awful emotional state. "Hikaru, please hold my hand."

This was how you knew you loved me.

You held my hand and you said,

"Suddenly I just knew it was you."

"The dull colours suddenly turned vibrant and the chirping of the birds became louder."

"I felt butterflies in my stomach and goosebumps from your touch."

"I knew that from that moment on – I fell in love with you."

Hikaru was confused at first but if this was the last request then he shall comply. He nodded and placed the luggage back down and approached his wife. He looked at her hand and wondered, "Was she always this pale and thin?" had he forgotten to look at his wife that much that he never noticed that she had been growing thinner?

A little hesitant, he held her hand and shivered at the cold touch.

"Now do you feel," she asked.

"… Nothing. Cold I guess."

Tsukiko's lips pursed in a smile, "I guess so. Thank you, I'll take care of the boys – it was my request to keep them both anyways."

She said as she gave Hikaru a smile – the smile that he used to love so much.

The male nodded and bowed before turning his heels then left the household. Once the door was shut, Tsukiko stared at the door and not before long her tears started to trickle down her face as she cried her heart out.

"I love you! I love you! I love you so much!" It hurt – ah it fucking hurts. Her heart felt as if it was being twisted like a towel, stretched like some piece of rubber, burned as if it was some wood – it just hurt so much. She felt a lump in her throat as she cried out her love for the man she once called her husband.

Hikaru on the other hand stayed outside the door as he looked at the horizon. A tear fell from his grey hues as a bitter smile was drawn upon his lips. "Was love always this painful?"
