Seer's Fortune
610 words

It was all Erutis' fault, Eclipse decided in the end, by getting Lord Raenef V interested in fortune telling when she'd come to visit one time. His lord, master, and liege had then gone on a rampage nearly-appropriate of a demon of his status, enthusiastically diving headfirst into the world of mysticism. All of the tarot card and crystal ball nonsense had finally culminated in Raenef's realization that, "Eclipse! Meruhesae is a fortune teller!" He'd sounded joyous.

Eclipse coughed discreetly and gently corrected his lord. "She's a Seer, Master Raenef. To call her anything else would be quite inaccurate, not to mention offensive." He had a responsibility to keep his master alive, after all, and that couldn't be guaranteed if he'd let Raenef prance around calling the foremost Seer of the demon realms a "fortune teller."

Raenef nodded brightly, not caring about titles so long as his fortune was told.

So the Fifth Demon Lord Raenef and his ever-faithful servant took a little trip to Meruhesae's palace.

"A friend will be returning to your side," the long-haired Seer said, smile mysterious. "You will welcome him back."

"Who is it?" Raenef asked eagerly, tail practically swishing.

"The boy destined to be High Cleric…though not for some time to come." Her eyes creased in a smile and she flashed a coy look at Eclipse. "He will find some distractions from his path."

A shudder ran through Eclipse even as Raenef continued prattling on happily. He rested his dark crimson gaze on Meruhesae, as if ordering her words to not have the implication he was sure they did. The thought was almost unbearable. She couldn't possibly mean…

Before he and Raenef left her palace to return home, Meruhesae drew Eclipse to the side. "I know what you're thinking," she told him, fan raised coquettishly to her mouth. A smile twitched upon her lips. "And, much to your dismay, I'm sure, it's true. The young cleric boy will be deeply infatuated with you."

"Intolerable," he snapped.

"It's not up to you," she replied breezily. "You're just so tall, dark, and handsome. Who could resist you?"

He scowled at her.

"When he first me you, he was terrified, but awed at the same time. His cockiness up to that point was almost insurmountable. But you were the one to bring him to earth." Meruhesae tilted her head, hair tumbling down her back. "You left an indelible mark, Eclipse. He's never forgotten you."

He thought of the boy in question—almost no longer a boy, really. It'd been nearly two years since he and the knight had left him and Raenef. His memory recalled deep blue eyes, usually flashing in passion of some ridiculous sort or other, a head of messy black hair, an infectious grin… And, despite the overt loudness and brashness, an intense loyalty and a true strength of will.

"I serve my master," he said blandly. "Personal interests that conflict with my service will be discarded without a second thought."

Meruhesae's smile was knowing. "Think you that Raenef will contend it?"

The Seer was right, damn her, Eclipse thought now, irritably. Raenef had been the first to burst into a bright smile and clap, bouncing around happily, when Chris, visiting, leaned forward and planted a swift kiss on Eclipse's lips. And then, when Eclipse had done nothing more than blink in semi-surprise, Chris had gathered his courage and done it again, lingering longer.

Raenef's smile had been pure delight. "Meruhesae was right!" he'd exclaimed excitedly. "Fortune telling is so cool!"

Maybe, Eclipse had thought dazedly, his lips tingling. But he would leave it to the experts because he would never have guessed it.
