Prologue
1503 China
"Are you sure about this?" boss asked me in a concerned voice. "You need a Thousand years to become immortal."
"I don't mind…" I replied, "As long as I can protect her, I will wait forever if I have to."
"Stupid boy! Do you know what you have to go through? In order to become immortal, your body will turn into ice, your blood into snow. Become a creature of night and winter…" Boss' voice was even but filled with sadness. "The physical and mental pain you have to endure in these 1000 years will be unbearable!"
"I don't care…"
"Why are you doing this?" boss asked me, anger clouding his voice, "She doesn't love you! She will never love you! No matter how much you torture yourself for her!"
I looked at him and gave him a sad smile. "Why are you constantly reminding me?" I let out a sad laugh, and said in a serious voice, "I love her and that is enough for me to do anything for her…"
Boss sighed and walked away from me and I sighed in relief thinking he was giving up the fight, but instead he turned around with a cautious look on his face as if this might be the last chance he had to change my mind.
"There is a curse." Boss said slowly
"What?" I asked surprised.
"There is a curse that will be put on anyone that wants to become immortal."
"What kind of curse? What is it?" my mussels tensed.
"No one knows, only you will know. As the moon rises on the 1000th day, a voice will tell you the curse. And that curse belongs to you alone."
"Will it hurt her?"
"No." Boss said looking down the long hallway. Did I imagine it or was there tears in his eyes. "It will only affect you."
"Then I will be fine…" I said relieved.
Boss gave a long sigh and walked away shaking his head.
"You will regret this, child… there is no doubt about that…"
"Did you ever regret it?" I asked cautiously, wondering if I crossed the line with this question.
He stopped where he was and turned towards me, I can no longer make out his features in the darkness but I can tell his face was a mask of grief. He just stood there looking at me not saying a word, but just before he turned around, I saw him shaking his head. I do not know if it was an answer to my question or grief towards my hopelessness but I don't care, what he has given me is enough.
"Thank you." I said quietly.
A year of spring, summer, fall and winter passed, and another year, and another. Trees grew taller, flowers lived and died… and I… I have gone colder, and colder…
A millennium passed like that, day by day, year by year… finally, the moon rise on the 1000th day, marking the end of this endless waiting. and out of the darkness there came a voice.
"She will never love you…"
