Prompt: sleepless nights

Word Count: 284

The light of the full moon reflects off of the water, bugs skeeting across the surface. Hard splashes break the image followed by softer, daintier splashes, drops of pond flying everywhere. Heavy pants are audible from a rough figure, hopping from branch to branch, a smaller shadow trailing close behind. Jumping from the tree tops landing haphazardly on his feet, the larger one ducks behind a tree, using its shade to his advantage. The white triangles adorning his head twitch as a twig snaps behind him.

The air hitched in his throat; he was face to face with his stalker.

His mate.

His lover.

The maiden before him sends him a smirk that he knew all too well. He stands frozen, petrified. His heart speeds up, adrenaline rushes through his veins.

Anxiety.

Desire.

Placing a dainty hand on her much accentuated hip, she tsks, her charcoal tresses fluttering ever so slightly. "You knew better than to run from me."

She takes a slow, confident step closer.

He gulps audibly, sweat beading along his hairline. His honey glazed eyes dart around nervously. He wants to run, flee, so badly, but his feet betray him, staying firmly planted on the ground.

She continues to take agonizingly slow, deliberate strides closer to him, erasing the distance between them.

Close enough to hear his breath hitch in his throat.

Close enough to feel his heart pound in his chest.

The salty seductress allows a small frown to grace her lips. "What's wrong?" She rests her hands on either side of the tree, making escape impossible. Licking her lips, she whispers," Do you want me to leave?"

He swallows, hesitant. This was gonna be a long night ..
