Author's Notes: Inspired by a headcanon found on the hiddenhogwarts Tumblr. A little plot bunny hopped into my head.
There's another door in Luna's closet.
She regards it with nothing more than a mildly curious blink. Around her, absent chatter continues. There are no sneers pointed her way, no jabbed fingers or hissing laughs. It's probably not a prank, at least. A casual look around reveals no one in the vicinity actually properly looking at her. No one likes to look at Loony anyway.
So she takes a deep breath, steps into her closet, and opens the door.
...Into another closet.
This one is empty and smells slightly of lemons. Luna stumbles forward, her elbow cracking against the wood, and suddenly the other closet door is thrust open, and hands tug on hers, gentle but insistent. She blinks rapidly, trying to assess the situation.
It's another dorm, but she's never seen it before. It's smaller and a bit cramped-looking, but there are no Wrackspurts here, and sunshine streams in through the high, narrow-paned windows.
"You're Luna, right?" the person holding her hands asks. She nods slowly. "I'm Mandy Brocklehurst."
"Hello, Mandy," Luna replies, agreeably enough. "What is this place?"
"You're not very happy in the girls' dorm, are you," Mandy states. Luna shakes her head. "Neither am I. Or anyone here."
"It's the non-binary dorm," someone else pipes up. Luna vaguely recognizes them as one of the prefects. Penelope? "You don't have to stay in here if you don't want to, and you don't have to move in here straight away even if you do want to. But it can be...nice, knowing other people understand."
"The beds here all have names and pronoun sets at the ends," Mandy says, pointing at her own bed, where the placard reads 'genderfluid, she pronouns.' Luna blinks again.
"May I be fae?" Luna asks politely.
"Certainly," Mandy grins. "So's Duncan." She points to the fourth-year at the far corner of the room, who blushes and covers faer face with one hand.
Luna looks around. Fae barely recognises anyone, but that's okay. It's not like fae recognises anyone in the girl's dorm, either.
"How do I move my things?" Luna asks. Mandy points at the empty bed next to them, where Luna's trunk has already deposited itself.
"Settles that question," Luna says airily, and settles down on faer new bedcovers.
Somehow, Luna thinks that fae will not be missed anywhere else.
