Missing Moment from Kitty's Love Affair.
Some Things just can't be
Slowly, Kitty righted herself up off the dirt on Front Street after locking eye to eye with Matt as he jumped off Buck. No words were needed. Then, Matt and Will walked into Matt office.
Paying neither of them any attention, Kitty made her way towards the Long Branch. Slowly ascending the stairs, crossing the landing she entered her room. She was thinking of how close she came to witnessing Will being hung by the town folk. These were people she'd lived with and known for years or thought she knew. And they were all ready to hang a man at a moment's judgment of excitement. Inhaling deeply, she threw back her head. "Thank God Matt rode in when he did."
Heading for the water closet, she mumbled to herself. "A hot bath is just what I need."
Suddenly, a light knock on the door interrupted her. "Just a minute!" She yelled out. As she entered the outer room, she asked, "Who is it?"
"Kitty, it's Will. Sorry. I know it's late but can we talk?"
Opening the door, furrowing her brow, she tilted her head. "Will? Come in." Waving her hand, "Please, sit. Can I get you a drink?"
Shaking his head, "No. No, Kitty, I won't stay. I… I just… Kitty, I just wanted to apologize."
Her face softened as she shook her head lightly. "No, Will. No apologies."
Slowly, she turned, pouring two glasses of Brandy and handing one to Will. "Will, I… I…"
"Kitty, don't." Will stopped her. "I saw your answer in your eyes when Matt rode up Front Street. Those beautiful blue eyes spoke volumes."
"Will, I…"
'It's alright, Kitty."
"Will, that day when we went for a ride. You said it takes some people a long time to decide what we want in our lives or if we need or want a change. And you said the trouble is that we sometimes need to decide if we want to make a change. You see, Matt and I have a history, a very long history, eighteen years. I can't really explain it to you but, Will, you were offering me things... well, things that I..."
Stopping her, now taking her by the shoulders. "No need, Kitty. "There are just some things that can't be." Will knew these things he offered, that Kitty wanted, were things she wanted with Matt. "But," he continued. "There's always hope and as long as I have hope..."
Nodding and smirking a smile up at him. "Yeah."
Leaning down, he placed a soft kiss on her lips. "Good night, Kitty. Will I see you in the morning?"
"You bet."
Standing by the stage depot, Kitty looked up at the Man all saw as a Gunslinger,. "Will, where will you go?"
"Oh, I'm not sure. Travel around for a bit. No place special."
"I'm sorry for..."
Placing a finger on her lips, "Shhhh, it's like the lady said, there's just some things that can't be."
Nodding, she smiled.
"But, as long as I have hope, ya never know, right?"
'Yeah, right." She said, smiling up at him.
"I'll never forget you, Kitty."
"Goodbye, Will." Leaning up on her toes, she softly kissed him. As he turned and climbed into the stage, she watched it pull off down Front Street.
Exhaling, she turned, slowly taking those seventeen steps down the boardwalk toward Matt. Stopping, inhaling, she looked up at him. "You know what? I know a lady who could really use a drink about now."
Twisting his mouth and adjusting his hat, Matt nodded. "I know a guy who's ready to buy."
Both locking eyes, smiling, slipping their arms around one another's waist, they made their way across Front Street, towards the Long Branch. Passing Doc and Festus, they brought smiles to their faces seeing all was right with their friends and Dodge.
