Flower Boy

----------------------------------------

A blue butterfly fluttered around a dandelion.

Six-year-old Sasuke was enchanted by the sight. Whenever he tried to grab the butterfly, it eluded his grasp but always returned to the dandelion. Sasuke sat back and watched the pair. He briefly wondered how the dandelion had grown up all alone through the cement.

"Sasuke-kun!"

Sasuke turned and acknowledged the pink-haired girl with a nod.

"Sakura-chan."

The girl beamed. "What are you looking at, Sasuke-kun?" she asked. Sasuke pointed at the flower. "See?" he declared proudly, "Isn't it pretty?" Sakura cooed, "That butterfly is pretty! But…" She frowned.

"That weed is ugly."

Sasuke glanced at Sakura, confused. "Isn't the flower pretty?" he inquired. She laughed.

"You're really a boy, Sasuke-kun! Dandelions are just weeds! It won't be good for the butterfly!"

Sakura reached forward, scaring off the butterfly. In front of Sasuke's horrified eyes, she ripped up the dandelion by its roots. Sakura sat back on her heels, satisfied.

"There!" she declared, "Now the pretty butterfly will go to better flowers."

Sasuke stared numbly at the bare crack in the sidewalk. Sakura noticed this and tried to reassure him.

"Oh, Sasuke-kun, the butterfly will be fine! There are lots of prettier flowers around and if the butterfly doesn't like them, there are still more dandelions…"

"Go away."

Sakura blinked in shock. Sasuke fiercely turned on her. "Go away!" he screamed tearfully, "I hate you! Don't come back!"

Sakura sniffled then ran away, crying. Sasuke sat there, staring at the bewildered butterfly fluttering around the uprooted flower, until his mother came to get him

The next day, Sasuke came back to the same spot to find the blue butterfly dead.

"The pretty butterfly didn't want a better flower."

AN: This was partially triggered by the childhood memory of dandelions in our front yard and during spring cleaning, Mom yanked them all up. I cried over the death of those weeds so I channeled by reaction through Sasuke. This is another one-shot I'll probably end up doing several chapters with if I ever get my lazy butt off the ground but I'm busy with Sea Salt Confession right now.
