Metroid Fusion 2: Extermination

Chapter 1: New Discovery, New Threat

Galactic Federation Log X82304: April 23, 20X8

While searching for abnormal planetary activity in relation to the recent wave of solar eclipses, a new planet was discovered within Federation boundaries. A name has not yet been assigned to it, but even now our research lab is planning a manned flight to this planet to search for intelligent life and survey the terrain. The planet appears to be largely water-covered, showing little signs of hospitable habitat for creatures similar to human beings. Despite this, early scans indicate that the planet is the source of a great number of healthy bio-signs.

Galactic Federation Log X81007: July 10, 20X8

The new planet that was reported several months ago has since been given the codename "OT586." A manned flight aboard the GFS Pioneer has been planned for launch tomorrow. Interestingly, more recent scans of the planet have indicated a massive drop in healthy bio-signs. Some are rethinking the prospect of sending a manned flight, instead suggesting a robotic ship in its place. Most, however, are opposed to the idea. Anyway, even if they were in favor of it, it's too late now to call off the manned mission.

Galactic Federation Log X81107: July 11, 20X8

The GFS Pioneer was launched successfully today. Now it will only be an estimated week's time until we receive word here at the labs about the conditions on the planet. I am still unsure about the safety of this venture; I must admit that I, too, have doubts about the source of the unhealthy bio-signs detected on OT586. Only time will tell whether this will be a safe journey.

END LOG--

On July 18, 20X8, exactly one week after the launch of the GFS Pioneer, the ship reached planet OT586. Soon after landing, every member of the crew was destroyed mysteriously. No one survived even long enough to identify the threat. The Galactic Federation was very confused. They thought the problem through over and over again, turning it over in their minds, and not one probable solution could be reached. Then one of the scientists realized something.

"Wait…didn't OT586 turn up all unhealthy bio-signs at the time of the missions?"

"Yeah, but what's your point?"

"Is it possible that the source of the destruction could be X parasites?"

The scientist's projection was met with hearty laughter. "Come on, you know as well as the rest of us that the X parasites are extinct!"

"Maybe they existed on another planet! If we could send an unmanned mission—"

"That would be very costly for our operations…"

"But if there's any possibility that there are X parasites there, we need a chance to wipe them out!"

"And how would we go about doing that?"

"Well, I know one way…" The scientist leaned over and told the others his plan.

"That's absurd!" another scientist replied. "You know that we don't own that contract anymore!"

"But it's the only way I can think of…she's the only person in the universe equipped to fight this threat!"

"Alright, we'll give it a try. Send a message to HQ: we need Samus Aran on the line ASAP!"
