For Bedelia. Happy Birthday!
Dean rubbed his gritty eyes; after so long on the run, looking over his shoulder at every turn, he felt as if he could never get enough sleep. Glancing out the window of Ron's Auntie Muriel's musty old house, he saw the dark sky just beginning to lighten as dawn approached. Stretching, he rolled slowly off of the little cot, careful not to wake the others. His entire body ached still, even after sleeping nearly 24 hours. Quietly he made his way to the kitchen, yawning widely as he poured himself a small glass of juice.
"A mouth that big is just indecent," Muriel croaked from the table. "And the lips are far too plump. Boys don't know how to be men anymore. In my day, a man would rather jinx his lips smaller, than go around looking like that."
Brow furrowed, he squinted into the darkness where she sat sipping wine and talking to her tiny stooped house elf. Dean shook his head and stepped outside, the dew wetting his bare feet and soaking the cuffs of his borrowed pajama bottoms. He was sure Muriel loved having so many guests, despite her numerous complaints about them. She seemed to enjoy nothing more than pointing out the flaws in everyone around her.
"Good morning, Dean," Luna greeted from above him.
After his heart rate returned to normal, he smiled at the girl dangling her legs off of the roof. "Hi Luna. What are you doing up there?"
"Waiting for the sun. It should be approximately three more minutes."
"You got up this early just to watch the sunrise?"
"Oh no; I've been awake all night. I watched the sun set and now I'll see his return." She was quiet for a moment, toes wiggling by Dean's shoulder. "Every holiday from school, my father and I would rise early to see the dawn. I thought I'd never see another one."
Dean looked up at her sad eyes, just visible as the first rays of the sun crested the earth.
"And now I'm watching them alone." A tear slid down her cheek.
Overcome with affection for the kind, peculiar girl, his hand lightly circled her ankle. "You're not alone."
Another tear slipped from her eye, but this time, she was smiling.
