"No More I Love You's"

................language is leaving me...........changes are shifting outside words........the language is leaving me in silence...........

Her heartbeats were a staccato against her breast. Beads of sweat wept from her temple and her hands were already wet making it hard to hold on. The cold breeze ruffled her ebony strands of long hair. She stared down beyond comprehension. Tears blurred the figure before her.

Death.

Staring back at her without seeing. Pale pools of blue liquid had stilled forever. Two dusty pilgrims never to lay their prayers upon her skin anymore.

Saved her.

He had used his body to shield her from the metal assault.

Shooting sticks of fire.

It was too late to stop. She was shocked that he came back for her. Too shocked to react quickly.

The coarse feel of the uniform scratched her face. But it was the clotting red fluid that she took first notice.

Too hot. Too sudden. Too intense.

Her lungs burning for air. His was losing air. Her heart pace increased. His was slowing. Her body tensed. His was slacking. Against each other. Pressing together. United in one moment.

His last gasp of breath jumpstarted hers.

Silence all around them. Birds stopped singing. And the roaring gale ceased.

Horses stomped hooves in protest. Tears flowed in sorrow. Hands reaching.

Reaching for him to come back.

But it's gone. No more of his sarcastic smirks. No more of his words whispering. No more of his tender touches.

The spirits had already flown away. Taking her champion with them.

Her anguish cries echoed throughout. Shaking body aching for his losing warmth.

Feelings long pushed aside rose to grip her heart in a painful clutch. Too late. Too late to tell. Too late to confess. Too late to save.

Her heartbeats were a quieting hummingbird against her chest. Beads of sweat dried sticky on her temple and her hands desperately soft caress. The heat matted her black strands of long hair. She stared upwards in sorrow. Tears blurred the sky into his. His eyes. Too far for her to touch evermore.

She knelt down and lay there until sunrise. Next to her lover. Who never knew she loved him.

When tomorrow will remember the loss all over again.

Author's Notes: Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's" and "Why" make pain sound so beautiful. This is both a tribute to her wonderful voice and the QoS. While the former would continue to make great music (Lennox's "Bare" just came out) the latter would not make any more appearances (We'll never know how far the Marcus/Tessa relationship could go to!). So this story parallels two of my favorite "likes". Also "Two dusty pilgrims never to lay their prayers upon her skin anymore" is slightly changed and borrowed from Romeo & Juliet (an allusion to the doomed romance). I wondered who caught that! And r/r ok? Thanks!
