Three times.
Three times she had been in danger, and he could have done nothing to save her from being killed.
Memories came flooding back to him, assaulting him with the sheer intensity of his recollections.
Of her being in some dark, godforsaken cabin with a mild-mannered man who had suddenly morphed into a murderer. All that he could do was to anxiously wait for her response, to hear her assure him of her well-being.
Of her searching for a bomb and arguing with a child while he willed her mentally from his couch to get the hell out of that place!
Of her muffled gasps of pain after her painful confrontation with him, while he waited with bated breath to confirm that she was all right. His trepidation had abated magically with the sound of her voice, filling him with a relief he still couldn't express.
He shivered slightly, and it was not because of the cold. The third time had almost been a charm...
It was ironic, actually. The three times she had been in danger, he had been on the phone with her. Hoping against hope that she would be all right, grasping at straws to keep her alive, while she battled it out alone.
He chuckled as he thought about her. Indomitable- the only way to describe her. Always the warrior.
And as he pondered in the darkness of his prison cell, he hoped that this trait of hers would keep her strong, help her survive.
He sighed. Even the phone was denied to him now.
A/N- I found it pretty interesting that Jane is on the phone whenever Lisbon is in harm's way. I am not sure whether the writers of the show are doing it consciously, or it is just a coincidence. Just thought of sharing my observation with you!
Please do review and give me your honest opinion about this fic. I am looking forward to your comments!
