He isn't stupid or blind, he notices the bruises on her arm the moment she places his breakfast in front of him.

He sees how she quickly pulls at her sleeves to cover them up, and the pleading look in her eyes not to ask about them.

Severus doesn't need to ask; he heard his mother screams' and his father shouting while he lay in bed.

He wanted nothing more than to help her, but he was too afraid to move. Too afraid that his father's anger would be redirected at him and it fills him with shame.

And as stare in her pleading eyes he makes a silent promise, one day when he's older and he has his wand he'll make his father pay.
