Heather Howard is about to graduate high school while preparing to go to college and join the adult world. This would be scary enough for a normal girl in a normal world. However the world is not the same as it was when she started high school.
In 2009 an alien race from the very distant planet of Cybertron had made itself known to the people of Earth, although these aliens have been on Earth for far longer. The humans call these aliens the Transformers due to their ability to mimic human technology of similar size and mass. While at first it seemed these Transformers were a destructive invading race when they asked the world governments to surrender a single human boy named Samuel Witwicky and threatened to destroy the planet if they did not get what they wanted. Fortunately the Transformers are not all so malevolent, a faction of them; the Autobots have allied themselves with the United States government and their allies and were able to stop their long time enemy; the Decepticons from whatever they had planned. Unfortunately the Decepticons were most likely only temporarily deterred as their main goal is no less than domination of the known universe.
Heather, like most people has no choice but to carry on with their lives despite the looming conflict between the human/Autobot alliance and the Decepticons and that's exactly what she's going to do. Life so far hasn't been easy, but is it ever for a teenager? SATs and college applications is enough to fill anyone's plate. She also has the added stress of her somewhat absent-minded and alien obsessed father working at all hours on some hush-hush government thing and for a long time coping with the death of her sister Leanne before starting high school, Heather is ready for a fresh start. But despite her best efforts to ignore the alien presence on Earth and the political situation that follows, she is determined to concentrate on her own life.
But as fate would have it; her disinterest in the aliens and the world as she knows it along with her own unknown connections with the Transformers are soon to come to an impasse.
