This is my response to FanFiction Challenge #10 that you can find on the forum page of the Unofficial Young Blades Website. I have posted this story on the Fan Fiction page as well.
Jacqueline sighed as she turned to him. "Why do you always follow me?"
D'Artagnan looked at her confused. "What?"
"You follow me around all day, and then I can't even go outside without you seeing."
"Well, I didn't realize you were headed for a 'rendezvous' with a gentleman."
Jacqueline wanted to hit him. "As I told you already, I got a letter from my brother. But you still didn't answer my question."
D'Artagnan refused to make eye contact with her. He shook his head slowly. "I promised your brother that I would take care of you. To be able to do that I have to be there in case you need me, even if you don't see me."
"Oh, so you followed me so you could be a hero?" Jacqueline teased.
D'Artagnan shook his head. "Trouble seems to follow you wherever you go, Jacqueline."
"I know."
"Then you also know why I follow you. I don't want to see you hurt," he whispered. He turned fully and faced the fire. Jacqueline put a hand on his shoulder.
"Thank you." She gave his shoulder a tight squeeze. "How did you know I left tonight?"
D'Artagnan smiled. "I was going to ask you about something and I noticed someone in the stables. When I realized it was you, I decided to follow you. Also, I didn't want you to leave me for another man," he teased.
"Oh, I see how it is. You can have all the women you want but I can't."
"I never said you couldn't have all the women you want. In fact, I'll share some of mine with you…" he joked. Jacqueline shook her head in disgust.
"You are such a pig."
"But a very handsome pig…"
