The Stargazers

Every night, thousands of people gathered at the square and watched the brightening sky. Jeff was the only one who seemed to be staying inside. Seven years have passed since Shepard's last fight in London. Enough for a religion to start. But still not enough for some people to forgive.

Shepard was Jeff's friend, though the latter could never comprehend the reason behind the commander's decision. Shepard sacrificed himself to save the galaxy and destroy the Reapers. However, with him, perished millions of Geth. And EDI too.

It was weird for a human to mourn after a Synthetic. But EDI was more than a mere VI or a robot. She had a mind and consciousness of her own. Some would even say she had a soul. She was the only person Jeff Moreau ever loved.

As he watched her body shutdown at the same time as the Reapers did, he knew she would never awake. Jeff knew Shepard's reasons to annihilate all AI, though he still hated him for this. He even abandoned his old nickname, Joker, as he could joke no more.

Miranda said something about the choice Shepard had to make. He could have chosen differently. But Jeff's old captain aspired to the same goal for five years. And, as always, he had accomplished it. Anderson's dream and Cerberus' bane. Both achieved with a single use of the Crucible. That devilish device the Protheans left behind. The Council should never have activated it.

But, of course, everyone was relieved. No one doubted the positive ramifications. And they ignored the wrongdoings of that act. The Quarians just learned to accept the Geth on Rannoch only to watch them all die along with the Reapers. It looked like nobody cared.

It was hardly a surprise when people began to worship Shepard. James, Ashley, even Garrus... Most of the old Normandy crew became the priests of this new cult, known as the Church of Stargazers.

The pilot never blamed them. Commander Shepard was certainly a hero. Their hero, but not his. Jeff hoped that some day he would forgive him and appreciate what he did for mankind. Maybe even sooner than expected.

For Jeff Moreau knew the truth, unknown to most. The truth passed on to him by Miranda and Javik.

Commander Shepard was still alive.
