I've seen this set up before. I studied minefields and landmines back home. The boy from District 3 wasn't very creative in his organization. He used the classic Dartmouth Design. It is very efficient in guarding something, unless someone knows how to get around it. I'm lying down in the brush, examining the Career's set up. I see the girl from District 12 in the woods, about 30 meters away from me. She is also checking out the area, and I have to make sure that I make my move first. I finally spot what I want on the pyramid of supplies. A blue backpack, containing food and a knife. It is at shoulder-level, next to a bag of apples.
Suddenly, Clove is on her feet, pointing at a column of smoke that is rising from some stupid tribute's fire. Or maybe it was planned, because Katniss is starting to move towards the supply pyramid. I have to move before she does. So, while the District 3 boy is looking the other way, I start running to the pyramid to start maneuvering around the landmines. Thankfully, the Girl on Fire has shrunk back into the woods. Okay, Dartmouth Design, section 53, left flank. There is a mine right in front of me, so I can jump I over it. Now, I can jump diagonally to my left, hopefully without blowing myself up. Now, I can take two hops, one to the right, and one forward. I grab the bag, run around the pyramid and towards the woods, out through the Career's safe path to the pyramid. Haha, the District 3 boy only just noticed the noise of me diving into my pre-prepared camouflaged shelter. I'm struggling not to laugh while he stands right outside my shelter, looking confused. Now he's running further into the woods. I turn back to face the Cornucopia to see what Katniss has planned. I am just in time to see her fire the first arrow, slicing the bag of apples open at the top. She is trying to cut the apples out, in order to blow up the pyramid. All of a sudden, I start singing a song that one of my family members from before the Capitol existed wrote. We have music sheets for very old songs in a box at my house. "Hit me with your best shot. Why don't you hit me with your best shot? Hit me with your best shot. Fire away." And then, Katniss fires again. The world seems to slow down as the apples fall towards the ground. I can tell right away that the apples will hit the key mine that will set off the entire field. I brace myself for the explosion that will shake the entire arena.
I have been in simulations of explosions before, so I am prepared for the explosion. What I am not prepared for is Cato's reaction when the Careers return. Cato's face is purple with rage and contorted from holding back screams. When the boy from District 3 returns to the Cornucopia, Cato releases all of his anger.
"What the hell happened?! We left you to guard the pyramid and you ran off!"
Before the boy has a chance to reply, Cato grabs his head and snaps his neck. The cannon goes off before he hits the ground.
"Cato, calm down. At least we got fire girl. She can't have survived that explosion." says Clove, Cato's district partner.
I'm running away now, so that the careers don't catch me while they are mad. What did happen to Katniss anyways? Ugh! That whistle is really getting on my nerves.
"Katniss! Katniss!" It's Rue. That sweet little girl has been caught in a trap.
