It was dark and cold. A long, broken yowl echoed across the Shadowclan camp. The clan watched in silence as Longstar fell beside the body of his mate. The dark grey tabby tom buried his nose in Blossompelt's cream fur. It was cold and wet. His beautiful mate, his loyal deputy, gone. Never again would he hear her soft purrs as she curled up beside him each night. Never again would he see her lithe form slipping through the brambles as she hunted an elusive mouse or lizard. Never again would he feel her warm tongue rasping over his cheek as she stood from the nest of kits to greet him after a day of patrols….. the kits! Swiftly, he stood and raced towards the nursery. "Winterkit!" he called. "Winterkit!" "I'm here!" Feeling waves of relief wash over him, he followed the mews to a patch of brambles. Looking underneath, he saw a small cream tom kit curled in a little hollow. "Winterkit!" he called. "where is Runningkit?" Silently, the kit stood. Curled up against his back was a tiny, week-old queen kit with dark gold fur, almost black with the rain. Ears and eyes still shut, soaking fur clinging to her tiny body, she looked little more than a scrap of wet fur. She mewed and squirmed, missing the older kit's warmth. Longstar felt his heart freeze. The kit's parents, Softlight and Moonstep, had been from two different clans. Moonstep, of Thunderclan, had come to Shadowclan when he found Softlight was to have his kits. Softlight had born only the one kit, and died in the labour. Moonstep had diligently cared for Runningkit, until the battle with the dogs. Longstar had seen the dark brown Tabby's body outside, but he had been too busy finding his beloved Blossompelt to grieve for him. Now, though, he wondered what would become of Runningkit. With Both parents gone, as well as Blossompelt, who had been feeding the kit in Softlight's absence, she would be alone. And she would starve, being too young to eat fresh-kill. But he knew Thunderclan's queen Sandstorm had recently kitted. Picking up Runningkit, he set off towards Thunderclan.
