Through the Long Night With You
Neville Longbottom stood at the end of his bed. His wife, he had assumed had gone to work early again. When he had gone into the kitchen he had found Luna by the stove. He had not immediately known she was dead. He had assumed she had had a fainting spell, which she had occasionally. But when picked her up and held her cold hands he knew she wasn't asleep. But he didn't want to accept it so he immediately apparated to St. Mungo's. But he knew before he got there. The cold hands were to cold. The eyes were to dark. And the silence of Ireland around him was only punctured by his sobs and raking breath.
It was midnight. He had called into work to explain the circumstances for his absence. He had not been able to enter his house, so he sat in her garden of strange plants. It was late, he knew that, but he could not think of his home without Luna. He waited for an owl or a wizard, some sign of news. He waited through the long night with only memories of her beautiful smile. The warm tears on her cheeks as she said 'I do" on their wedding day. When she curled up to him and told him of bad dreams she had. The soft cry and trembling shoulders as she sobbed when she found that her baby was born dead. Her old fears of Voldemort tearing her father from her, clouding her thoughts. He remembered her excitement when they bought there first home together, and when she planted her first Snargill Pepper in the back yard. He thought of all this as he waited through the long night to hear news from her.
-Many years later-
Neville Longbottom died in his sleep. The healers say he experienced no pain and it was quick. Although all grieved for him, the friendly Herbology teacher, the clumsy boy, the heroic fighter, the loyal friend, all knew he was happier with his Luna. When Luna had died Neville did not want to admit it. Saying it out loud would make it true. He merrily went along, pretending that she was hunting Crumple-Horned Snorcacks or visiting her father in America. He had gone a little crazy with sorrow and absence of his heart.
But what it had cost him to be happy again. He had lost his Luna, his true love, his other half. Long ago, maybe he could have ignored the pain and gone on, but that time was long past. He had known he should have told someone of his pain, but he bled inside for her. His bleeding and remorse never stopped. When he should have been sleeping he laughed at their awkward teenage years and the fun they had had together. But once he had started he couldn't stop and he always woke up broken hearted, as he did everyday. It was late when he died but he had waited a long time to be with her. He could see his Luna again.
