He makes it about Elena. He makes it about Elena because if he makes it about Rose (which it is) he won't stand a chance. He's used to dealing with loving (does he really? He's not sure, he's never sure) Elena; he can handle that. He can face rejection, he can face being unable to meet her expectations.
But Rose, dead and with her, her utter lack of expectations and her uncanny understanding of him that makes him look at himself?
That he doesn't know how to bear.
