Sexism in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"

You'd think that fairy tales were perfect, but in fact there are many examples that would be thought of as insulting towards females in society today. In fact, almost every fairy tale is sexist towards women in some way. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the universal fable, is a great example. The story starts off with a young, beautiful princess with a wicked stepmother who becomes queen. The queen has a magic mirror who, every evening, asks this question: "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" to which to mirror replies, "You, O Queen, are the fairest in the land." I find this part sexist because it assumes that girls are so cautious of their looks and they don't care about what's on the inside. This is only true in the case of maybe one or two girls I have ever met. At any rate, one night, the mirror declares that Snow White is the fairest in the land. Subsequently, a hunter was sent to kill the poor girl in the middle of the forest by her jealous, resentful stepmother. Instead, the hunter took pity on the princess and presented a pig's heart to the evil queen instead of the girl's. Soon Snow White came across a small cottage in the woods. Seven dwarfs lived there and they agreed to let her stay. This is the part that I find the most offensive to females, because during her stay with the dwarfs she cooked their food, cleaned their mess, and took care of all seven little men. This is disrespectful because it is a generalization that all women do is cook, clean, and take care of the children. On the contrary, women have the same capabilities as any man has; women have the right to any occupation a man has. It would not be fair to the female gender if boys could do some things that girls cannot, for it would give males a sense of superiority and majesty. I believe that women deserve to do anything that men are privileged to do, and the same goes for men doing anything women can do. Continuing the story, the wicked queen finds out that her stepdaughter is still alive and plots to kill her herself. She disguises herself as an old woman and offers Snow White a poisoned apple. As soon as Snow White takes a bite, she falls to the ground, asleep until her true love's first kiss. When the dwarves find her, they feel guilty that they weren't home to protect her. This is also sexist because the dwarfs assume that women cannot defend themselves and they need men to protect them. It was wrong for the seven dwarfs to think this way, even if she had been gullible and tasted the stranger's apple. Anyhow, the dwarfs set her in a golden casket with a glass covering so that they could still see her. Snow White was awoken when "Prince Charming" kissed her dead, frozen lips. They were wed, moved into an enchanting castle, and lived happily ever after. It just goes to show, stereotypes and sexism can be found fairly regularly in society, even in fairy tales, which aren't entirely those admirable classics that the world has made them out to be…there are many faux pas within their splendid glamour.
