Chapter 1 Freedom Null en Void Part I

We all know how Sonic the Hedgehog the Animated Series ended. We all have our own ideas of how things might have gone.

The events that were to occur after Doomsday have been subject to many stories. It stands to reason that each story is true.

So here we are again: Another story somewhere in the multiverse of fan-generated fiction, different from others we know, but all the same as well.

Something is about to violently-if literally-spill into this particular world.

The question remains...How will this particular story play out?

Outskirts of Robotropolis: The morning after the failure of Project: Doomsday.

The city of Robotropolis sits eerily still in the perpetual, clouded night that shadows. The mechanical workforce is reduced to nary a skeleton crew: No SWATbots transporting rebel holdouts, no factories spewing smog.

The city is quiet, nothing mechanized nor living in its dimly-lit streets.

On the edge of the city sits an abandoned factory for PEACEbots built before the coup a decade ago. It is a square structure, crumbling and from neglect. It's design possibly reminiscent from wherever the traitorous warlord came from.

A single rodent crawls out of a crack in a wall near a gridded window, scavenging.

Suddenly, a burst of red light erupts from the window, scaring the vermin off.

In the brilliance, shadows of arachnid legs and claws play on the surrounding structures, an unearthly roar pierces the city.

Lumbering shapes burst from an improvised whole in the main door, spreading into the surrounding city. Winged silhouettes take to the air.

Knothole Village: Same time-residence of Sonic and Sir Charles (Chuck) Hedgehog.

Sonic and his Roboticized uncle Chuck slept on opposing sides of the former's one-room hut. A red, flip-open device on the coffee table began flashing and emitting a shrill klaxon.

Sonic, a potbellied blue hedgehog with hair reminiscent of a mohawk, fumbled at an inert alarm clock in his disorientation. He groaned. "Where's the snooze button..."

His uncle, lighter in color, as well as having a mustache and robotic features, sat up, turning black and discreetly red optics toward the sound. "What in blazes?" he asked, getting up.

"Yo, Unc?" Sonic asked groggily, "What're you doin' with Nicole?"

"This isn't Nicole." Chuck replied. "This is my computer, Nate. Nicole was based on his design."

"Say what?" Sonic asked. Still sleepy.

The elderly robotic hedgehog chuckled in amusement. "You think The Queen got this from Robotnik?" He chuckled. "She never did like him..."

"That was totally un-cool, what happened to Sally's Mom..." Sonic mused sadly, still partially asleep.

"It can happen to anyone, Sonny." Chuck reminded him sadly. "At least Sally had her father...and you, to help her." He smiled as he fiddled with the device.

"Me?" Sonic said in confusion.

"Yes." Chuck replied. "When you two became friends, the King told me how happy she was. He said she hadn't been like that since her mother passed."

"Huh?" Sonic seemed to not fully grasp the idea as sleep grasped him.

A shrill buzz came from the device in Chuck's hand. "What on Earth..."

A scream that sounded far too high-pitched, but still distinctly male pierced the air.

"Aw, what's Ant's problem now?" Sonic said in exasperation.

Darting out of the hut, Sonic went across the bridge, heading for the lookout on the tree.

The quick-moving hedgehog came to a stop at the foot of the tree, avoiding the crevice caused by the emerging Doom pod last night. "YO ANT! WHAT'S-!" He was cut off having to dodge a laser blast with a yelp.

A long, gray creature with bat-like wings, no eyes, and tentacles circled the canopy, trying to get to the screaming coyote that was Antione Depardieu.

Sonic gasped at the sight. "Looks like something outta one of those science fiction movies Uncle Chuck and I found." He revved himself up. "It ain't a bothead, but it's still juice time!"

Sonic shot up the tree, leaping off the decking. He kicked the creature in the jaw, causing it to tumble backward. "Aye YA!"

Sonic landed next to a blue-clad Antione, who was still trembling in fear. "M-m-mer ci, Son-eek."

"I'm sure." The hedgehog replied sarcastically.

The strange, winged monster came back around, recovering from the surprise attack. It opened its mouth, and red energy began to congregate within its maw.

"Ye-uh oh!" Sonic said, knowing what was coming. Grabbing Antione's hand, he sped down the tree just before the blast hit, the coward shrieking as they went.

Sonic stopped under the tree line. The creature gave a roar as it circled, searching for its would-be prey. Giving a final shriek, the thing flew off.

Sonic let out a sigh, taking his hand off of Antione's trap. "That was mondo weird!"

"I am thinking it 'was mondo-ly scary!" Antione rebutted.

"Sonic! Antione!" cried out a female voice.

A brown and beige-furred chipmunk female clad in a pink nightgown ran toward them, her auburn hair still in a matching nightcap. "Sonic, what happened?" Asked Princess Sally.

The hedgehog jerked a thumb behind them. "This big worm-bat thing with squid arms was attacking Ant." He frowned. "It wrecked the lookout tree."

Sally raised an eyebrow. "A worm-bat? Really Sonic?"

"He is telling ze truth, moi Princess!" Antione spoke up, pantomiming. "Ze monster: it was having batty wings, none of ze eyes, and lo-ong how you say-eh...tentacles."

Sally's skepticism fell into worry. "You're both sure?"

Both of them nodded. Usually they fought over everything, but their unanimous agreement on the matter told her that they were telling the truth.

"Sal, we're being serious." Sonic began. "If ya want proof, check the lookout tree."

"I know." She replied gravely. "That's what's scaring me."

"Kids!" Came Uncle Chuck as he ran up, handheld of his own in-hand. "I think you outta see this."

"So you're saying that there's been a sudden energy spike in Robotropolis?" Sally asked as everyone stood near the stage.

"That's right," the elderly mechanized hedgehog replied.

"Pardon lil' ol' me for soundin' slow," Interrupted a honey-colored rabbit in a pink leotard, and gray legs and left arm due to robotization. "But why is that a bad thing, Sugar Chuck?"

Chuck messed with the handheld a bit. "Well Bunnie: The way the energy is behaving is what's got me worried." He told them, his tone becoming grave. "It's distorting space itself."

Sally gasped. "It's...warping space!"

"What's that mean?" Asked a tall, dull-green dragon.

"It means that it's bending the fabric of our universe, Dulcy." A dark-gray walrus in a red cap and bandolier answered. "It could be opening portals to other places; like when they went to The Void."

"Oh!" The dragon replied. "I see."

"That might explain where the 'worm-bat' came from." Uncle Chuck added. "We'd have to go into the city to find out."

"Hold up!" Piped a small, brown fox kit. "If Ro-buttnik's gone, why would anything be goin' on in robo-town anyway?"

Sally put a hand on his shoulder. "That's a good question, Tails."

"Then I say we kick it to Buttnik's old place and see what's cookin'!" Sonic declared, driving a fist into an open palm for emphasis.

"I'm thinkin' you're right, Sonny-boy." Chuck agreed. "Sally?"

The princess sighed. "As reckless as that is, we don't have much of a choice." She rose, reservation written on her face. "Get ready everyone. We're going back to Robotropolis."

An ovular, snub-nosed craft flew alongside an airborne Dulcy, who carried Sally, Rotor, and Bunnie. The clouded skies of Robotropolis lie ahead, tinged with crimson.

"Whoa!" Sonic exclaimed beside Uncle Chuck, "I've seen those clouds tons of colors, but that's a totally un-rad red!"

"I hear ya, Sonny," Uncle Chuck replied as he flew the ship, "All my years in this sham of a city, and I've never seen the sky like that!"

In the back seat of the craft, Antione shivered, gibbering in fear. Tails frowned. "C'mon Ant; don't be a frady-cat!"

"I-I-I am not b-being frady of ze cats!" The trembling coyote rebuffed timidly, "I am just c-cold!"

"Sure thing, Ant." Sonic muttered skeptically.

The radio crackled. -I'm not seein' any worm-bats...- Dulcy pointed out in irritation. -You guys sure you weren't pullin' my tail?-

"C'mon Dulc," Sonic countered, "You saw what that one did to the lookout tree!"

-He's gotcha there, Dulcy. - Rotor chimed in.

The console of the craft beeped an alert to its pilots, cutting off the remainder of the conversation. "Looks like we're coming up on the origin point of the signal."

"Where is it?" Sonic asked.

The elderly, mechanical hedgehog suddenly stopped dead, staring out at something. He pointed towards it. "That!"

As Sonic followed the direction, his eyes widened. On the city's edge was a building with a red vortex of energy contorting out of a point on its roof. "Whoa!" He breathed in awe.

The radio cracked again. -Guys, Look out!-

Something struck the pod, pitching it sideways and sending it toward the ground below. Its occupants crying out.

"Hang on, boys," Chuck yelled, "I went down like this back in the war!" The old man fought with the stick to keep control as they plummeted, the craft careening into a nearby building.

"Sonic!" Sally yelled.

The last thing the young blue hero saw, was a looming wall in the front viewport, and then,

Nothing...

"Sonic..." A voice called as Sonic's eyes flickered open, seeing Sally stand above him, worried.

"Whoa..." The dazed hedgehog breathed, "Couldda gone with a little warning next time. Uncool..."

"Sonic, are you all right?" Sally asked in concern.

"I'm cool." He suddenly bolted upright. "Where's Unc and Tails!?" He asked suddenly.

"We're fine, Sonny." Piped up the elderly doctor, "Dulcy took Antione and Tails back to Knothole. There's more than just those creatures flying around."

"Like what?" Thudding footsteps answered his question. Peering around the corner, they saw a yellow hulk of a monster on four spider-like legs with black lips and no eyes. It was taller than Dulcy!

"Whoa!" Sonic whispered, "Where'd big-ugly come from?"

"Same place as those worm-bats." Chuck stated, jerking a thumb the other direction. "The signal's point of origin is that way. If we can get to it, maybe we can stop more of these monsters from coming through!"

Sonic looked determined. "Then let's find that signal!"

"Sonic!" Sally spoke up. "Are you sure you're all right?"

"Sure as a hedgehog's gotta juice, Sal!" He answered.

"He doesn't appear to be injured, and Nate confirmed it." Uncle Chuck stated. "Might as well let him off the hook, Nurse."

The group came upon a deserted factory, the windows were shattered, and it looked like something from Mobotropolis, only horribly decayed. It was a simple, square building with tall gridded windows run along the sides. A hole was bashed outward in the metal door.

"Well." Rotor noted with a somber tone. "This looks like the place."

There was a crackle somewhere within, and red light surged through the windows. The sound of something sputtering followed, fading out as the light flickered with it.

Inside, the group found an open factory floor. Old, disused machines for manufacturing PEACEbots stand, covered in dust.

"I remember this place." Sally stated. "My father and I visited Juli-Robotnik here back during the Great War." She looked around "It looks just the same...except for that."

At the center stands a gray cylinder sitting on a pivoting base, the machine resembling a spotlight. Paneling appears to have been removed: parts and wires not of the original design sticking out of the modified machine.

"I was here too, and I don't remember that." Uncle Chuck added. He pulled out his computer, and it suddenly beeped in confirmation. "That's it!"

"What's it, Charlie?" Bunnie asked.

"That machine, there. It's the source of the anomaly!" As the old man spoke, red arcs of lightning began to play over the machine.

"Okay..." Sonic said, spotting what was about to transpire. "This hedgehog's had enough of those Dingbats gettin' the jump on him!" He reached into his backpack, pulling out a gold ring.

"Sonic, Don't!" Uncle Chuck yelled, "It's unstable!"

His words fell on deaf ears. As the gold energy from the ring flickered, an almost magnetic force pulled at it, jerking Sonic forward and tearing the ring from his hands. "Whoa!"

The ring was pulled into a red miasma congregating at the beveled top of the machine. Gold intermixed with crimson as the two energies came into contact. Suddenly a large, rust-orange sphere blossomed up into the air like a miniature sun.

"Hit the Deck!" Chuck yelled.

Light filled the room as the sphere expanded. A single silhouette appeared at the center. Before being ejected from the anomaly, landing somehow softly from the maelstrom. Then lightning surged from the sphere as it climbed higher, taking the roof off of the main building.

The sphere exploded, shock waves piercing the perpetual gloom and allowing shafts of sun to peak through.

Then, it was quiet.

And that, my friends, is the end of chapter one. I realize these stories are frowned upon, and common of first-timers: but this idea has been floating around in my head for years now, and I wan't to make it good. Someone new will be joining Sonic's merry band of fighters, and it isn't the hero of the Omnitrix.

The inspiration of this story actually comes in part from a discontinued work by one Seanzilla115 called "Ben 10: Freedom Force." I believed it was an excellent concept, and decided to try my hand at this. If you're reading this, thanks.

This story will be a sort of Ben 10/SatAM crossover, albeit with an original character. The one thing I have noticed with these fics-and will try my hardest to avoid-is the whole "gary/mary-stu" business.

I know full-well why these types of fics stink, don't get me wrong. So I have a bit of a quandary: To prevent the above common flaw; should I utilize the first ten Aliens unlocked in Alien Force, or alternately, ten of the aliens unlocked in Ultimate Alien?

With the original list, it seems more believable. However the ones there seem over-powered. With the andromedas and the others; it seems powered down, but the concept seems...hashed-together? That's been a major stopping-block.

Just a heads-up: I am largely ignoring Omniverse in this tale. I do not care for it, let's just leave it at that.

All right, I've said my piece, and now must start up with chapter two. Thanks for reading. Leave a review-if so inclined-and, flames will either be frozen by a Necrofriggean, or hosed by an Orishan, depending on how things work out. A good day to you all.
