It'll be short, but I had to write it because I couldn't get it out of my head.
This is probably pre-nogitsune, too. I actually don't know where it fits in the time-line but I feel like they totally gave up on a good plot-line and character when it come to Isaac's story. So this is what happened in my brain.
It's funny, I've never had a real family, but if someone were to look at us right now, they might be mistaken into thinking we are the perfect American home. Except for the fact that Scott's dad is here. (Whose name I'm pretty sure is just Agent.) It makes it a little awkward sometimes. But the house has a perfect six-seat dinning table, so somebody somewhere must've thought that our strange situation could work, if only for having company over for dinner.
Sheriff Stilinski, still in full uniform, sits at one end of the table, Scott's dad at the other. Scott and Stiles are across from Melissa and I. Strangle little family, but more family than I've ever known before. I smile to myself and try to contribute to the conversation when I can.
Agent McCall and the sheriff are talking about the huge level of unsolved missing persons cases in Beacon Hills, Stiles throwing out all sorts of theories at rapid speed, Scott attributing where he can.
"Who was the last person to see him?" Stiles asks between huge bites of chicken alfredo.
"A neighbor I think. I don't know, Stiles, I don't have the files memorized," Sheriff Stilinski says nonchalantly.
"What's the first thing you have to do to solve a cold case?" Scott asks.
"Wait for new evidence to show up. A case doesn't become cold until you can't do anything else with the evidence you have. You have to move on eventually. But you keep them," Agent McCall goes up for the air quote, "cold, until you get something new to go on."
"That's why I'm in the hot seat right now; too many cold cases and not enough evidence," the Sheriff sighs. There's a beat of silence before Stiles saves the day.
"Beacon Hills must have a whole different class of criminals," Stiles offers.
"Yeah, but we're hoping for some kind of break if I'm going to keep my job," the Sheriff says.
"What about a serial killer?" I ask. Nobody was expecting that, much less from me, probably and everyone's looking at me now.
"What about it?"
"You have a bunch of unsolved murders, what if most of them were one person that never got caught? If you could find that out and solve a lot of cases all at once, would that help you, I don't know.. not get fired?" I ask, trying to sound less knowledgeable about the subject. When I look up from my pasta, trying to look normal, the sheriff is chewing on the inside of his cheek.
"No evidence ever seemed connected but we never found more than half of the bodies of the missing people."
"Of course, no body means little evidence. But a serial killer working on his own would've left something," Agent McCall says. "It's not impossible, but highly unlikely."
"But if it WAS a serial killer, and he or she DID account for most of the missing people, would you be back in good graces, Dad?" Stiles asks excitedly. Then again what doesn't Stiles do excitedly?
"It would definitely help, yeah. I'm about to go to a preliminary and the first things they'll look at are the unsolved cases versus the solved ones. You'd be surprised at the size difference," Sheriff Stilinski says as he finishes and puts his napkin on the table.
I keep thinking of how happy I am now, and how I really don't want this to change. I don't want the Sheriff to loose his job. These people have done so much for me. I have to do something. I can't just sit here and let this happen. But I don't want them to know what kind of person I am. Was. I'm only seventeen now, they won't send me to jail, will they? Not if I help them, no, I've seen it in movies. A deal, I can probably make a deal.
"Isaac, you in your head?" A hand waves in front of my face and I flinch backwards more than I should; another reminder of what my life used to be and isn't anymore, thanks to these people, my new family.
"What if somebody knew something about a lot of the missing people and didn't say anything?" I mutter.
"Warm…" Stiles whispers just loud enough for werewolf hearing.
"They didn't say anything until now because they didn't think they needed to but now they want to help you not loose your job."
"Warmer..."
"But they really don't want to get in any kind of trouble or go to jail or anything."
"You're getting hotter…"
"But if that person knew who the killer was, and maybe knew where a lot of bodies might or might not have been hidden."
"Really warm now…"
"And that person maybe helped with a lot of body hiding and never told anyone even after their serial killer father was murdered because they didn't trust the law because it never did them any good their whole shitty life and now they want to help solve some cases so that you don't loose your job because that person owes you people his whole life and just wants to help without going to jail or being hated, what would you do about that person?"
"And boom goes the dynamite. Dinner and a show! How long have you been keeping that one in the barrel?" Stiles exclaims. I glare at him because I think I just screwed myself over and he's making jokes. Everyone else is looking at me wide eyed and I know already that I should've kept my mouth shut. It takes a minutes (literally the longest sixty seconds of my life) and Sheriff Stilinski finally speaks.
"Well, first of all, I would do everything in my power to keep this person safe because I'm sure he never meant to do anything wrong. The fact that he's coming forward now when I need him means more than not coming forward before when I'm sure he had a lot of pressure not to." Silence again and I see Melissa put he hand over her mouth out of the corner of my eye. "You don't have to testify against your father-"
"I don't want to testify to anything. I can show you where the bodies are, and tell you who killed them obviously, show you any other evidence you need, I just… I know I should've said something earlier and I'm so sorry. I just thought it was all finally over and it would never come up again. I didn't know it was causing you trouble still. You guys have done a lot for me, I just want to pay you back somehow."
"We're going to need a little more than just the bodies, Isaac. But if you tell us everything you know, we could get a lot of these cold cases off the shelf and maybe give the sheriff some breathing room," Agent McCall explains with his head resting on crossed finger.
"Alright, whatever I can do. Just… please don't put me in jail.. again."
"Oh honey," Melissa smiles sadly, and I see Scott nodding his approval.
"It'll be alright Isaac," my alpha says, "you're doing the right thing."
I hope so.
Reviews are very encouraging. :)
