"Autumn Understanding" by Amber Esme Hermione

I breathe in the mix of smells that is autumn afternoons—crisp air mingling with damp hay and sun-warm cloth and wood. I press my nose into the flanel and cotton—detergent, animals, cologone, and sweat. His chest rises and falls with the rythem of his snores, and I smile realizing I've fallen asleep on top of him after doing nothing more than talking about his frist day back to school. We spent the together here in the loft or at the castle, but now he must devote several hours five days a week to Smallville High, and I gurdgingly have to let him.

"Lex?" a hand falls lightly on my shoulder, and I look up in panic to see his mother.

"Mrs. Kent! I—"

"Shh," she places a finger to her lips looking fondly at her son, "It's just easier to wake you than Clark. Dinner will be done soon. I'm setting a place for you." Her smile creases her face and brightens her eyes.

"I don't want to intrude," for some reason she isn't commenting on the fact that I'm still partially sprawled across her son.

"Lex, it's ok," each word is deliberate, and I blink back my shock as she turns to leave. She pauses at the top of the stairs, "Call me Martha." Her footsteps decend, fading as she leaves the barn.

I look down at Clark's face to see his green eyes open watching me with a grin, and I wonder if his father knows.

A/N: This is an AU I've been thinking about since I woke up from a nap yesterday. I love autumn, and the unique smell of it. I had this idea of Lex and Clark waking up together. Then it evloved to Martha finding them asleep in the loft. It's always a negative thing when a parent finds them,a dn I wanted it to be different here.
